Fener and Balat sit side by side on the Golden Horn in Fatih, with Ayvansaray beyond Balat.1 Fener's name comes from the Greek phanarion, a lantern, after a Byzantine lantern column; Greeks settled here after 1453, and the Patriarchate of Constantinople moved to Fener in 1602 and has stayed.2 Balat took in Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition from the late 15th century, and at its peak had 18 synagogues, three of them still in use.1
Many of Balat's small stone terraced houses have been repainted in bright colors, and in the 2020s it became one of the city's most popular tourist areas, with houses turned into cafés, restaurants and guesthouses.1 The cafés gather on two streets, Kürkçü Çeşmesi Sokağı and Vodina Caddesi.
Local tip: Ride the T5 tram from Eminönü to the Balat stop, by the ferry pier, and start at Coffee Department on Kürkçü Çeşmesi Sokak, open from 08:00.
