Karaköy is the modern name for historic Galata, the port quarter of Beyoğlu at the mouth of the Golden Horn; the Genoese held it as a colony from 1273 to 1453.1 In the late 1800s it became the city's banking and insurance center along Bankalar Caddesi, where the Ottoman Bank had its headquarters, and it is still known for hardware suppliers and the seafood restaurants around its fish market.1
Specialty coffee came in the 2010s. When Coffee Sapiens opened on Kılıç Ali Paşa Mescidi Sokağı in July 2014, European Coffee Trip reported, the area had turned within three years from a dark, dangerous neighborhood into a place of boutiques, small cafés and restaurants.2 The same street now has LOL Coffee Roasters and Dandin.
Local tip: LOL Coffee Roasters on Kılıç Ali Paşa Mescidi Sokağı serves until 02:00, so a coffee after a late Bosphorus ferry is still possible in Karaköy.
