Kadıköy stands on the site of Chalcedon, which Greek settlers from Megara founded in 685 BC, a few years before Byzantium across the strait.1 Its center is the çarşı (market quarter) behind the ferry piers, a grid of food shops anchored by Güneşlibahçe Sokak and open roughly 09:00–20:00, and Bahariye Caddesi, the pedestrian shopping street where the Süreyya Opera House, a 1927 theater, stands.12

Old and new coffee share the same blocks. Fazıl Bey'in Türk Kahvesi has served coffee since 1923, and Baylan has made cakes in Kadıköy since 1961.34 Montag Coffee & Roasters and Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir are on Muvakkithane Caddesi with Baylan, and around them are small cafés, a board-game club and vegan places such as Salve and Veganarsist.

Local tip: Ferries back to the European side thin out after 21:00 and stop around midnight, so after a late coffee at Fazıl Bey’s or Thales Cafe, plan on Marmaray from Ayrılık Çeşmesi.
