İstiklal Caddesi is a 1.4 km pedestrian street through Beyoğlu, the old Pera, from Tünel Square to Taksim Square.1 In Ottoman times it was the Cadde-i Kebir or Grande Rue de Péra, and it was renamed İstiklal, independence, after the Republic was declared on 29 October 1923.1 Galatasaray High School stands at its midpoint, and Çiçek Pasajı opens off the avenue nearby.1 The 1955 Istanbul pogrom damaged many Greek-owned shops here; the street was restored and pedestrianized in the late 1980s and early 1990s.1

Coffee on İstiklal hides in its passages and side streets. Olivya Geçidi, a passage off the avenue, holds Mandabatmaz; Asmalı Mescit Sokak, Yeni Çarşı Caddesi and Kartal Sokağı have smaller cafés that open from early morning or stay up until after midnight.

Local tip: Ride the Tünel up from Karaköy, about a minute and a half, and walk İstiklal north from Tünel Square: Olivya Geçidi and Mandabatmaz come before Galatasaray, Taksim at the far end.
