Ask for the Wi-Fi in an Istanbul café and the password is often printed on your receipt. In a growing number of cafés that password now expires after 90 minutes and cuts you off, Hürriyet Daily News reported in June 2026, in districts such as Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and Şişli where groups of remote workers are a common sight.1

Some cafés go further. Signs at the door ban laptops on Saturdays and Sundays, some owners have switched off power outlets or open them only on request, and a few ask long-staying customers to order again every two hours.1 No law bans computers in cafés, a lawyer told the paper; owners may set conditions as long as they tell customers in advance.1

Local tip: Check the receipt for how long the Wi-Fi password lasts, and ask about weekend rules before you open a laptop on a Saturday: some cafés now ban them at weekends.1
