Ukrainian Village sits between Division Street and Grand Avenue, from Damen Avenue west to Western, and became a Chicago Landmark District on December 4, 2002.1 Its parishes include St. Nicholas, the first of its two Ukrainian Greek Catholic churches, and Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, founded in 1968 by Patriarch Josyf Slipyj, which still follows the Julian calendar.1 The neighborhood remains the center of Chicago’s Ukrainian community.5
East of it, West Town continues through East Village and Smith Park toward River West, and the Blue Line stops at Grand, Chicago, Division and Damen, with direct trains to the Loop and O’Hare.5 Cafés run along four streets: Division (Candor at 1745, Caffe Streets at 1750, Lost Larson at 2140), Chicago Avenue (Standing Passengers at 1458, SOL Chicago at 1651, Altar Cafe at 1856, Prequel at 1957), Grand Avenue (Move Along Coffee at 1223, Alliance Bakery at 1837) and Ashland Avenue, with Mano Modern Cafe and Engine Coffee.
Local tip: Soft Parade on Grand Avenue closes at noon, so go in the morning; The Mothership on Western Avenue, about half a mile northwest, serves until 17:00.
