Andersonville began as a village of Swedish immigrants who moved north of the city limits after the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, when wooden houses were banned in the city; its name comes from the Andersonville School, built in 1854.1 The commercial historic district runs along Clark Street from Ainslie Street to Rosehill Drive, with its center at Clark and Berwyn, and the Swedish American Museum, opened in 1976 in the presence of King Carl XVI Gustaf, is now at 5211 N. Clark.1

Uptown lies east and south of it, between Clark Street and the lake. Argyle Street, known as Little Saigon or Asia on Argyle, became home in the 1970s to immigrants from China, Vietnam and Cambodia, many of them refugees.2 To the north, Edgewater’s Broadway, Bryn Mawr Avenue and Granville Avenue complete the area, with cafés near Loyola University’s lakefront campus.

Local tip: For a weekday start before 07:00, The Lost Hours on Broadway opens at 06:30; Kopi on Clark Street doesn’t open until 10:00 but stays open into the evening.
