Chicago’s downtown takes its name from the elevated railway circuit that opened on September 6, 1897: 1.79 miles (2.88 km) of track on Lake Street, Wabash Avenue, Van Buren Street and Wells Street, still used by the Brown, Orange, Pink, Purple and Green lines.1

Inside and around the rectangle, many cafés keep weekday hours only: Espresso and Milk at 20 N. Wacker Drive opens 07:00–15:00, River Roux at 110 N. Wacker 07:00–16:00, Sterling Café at 125 S. Clark Street 07:30–15:30 and Cafecito at 7 N. Wells Street 08:00–17:00, all Monday to Friday. Michigan Avenue, facing Millennium Park and Grant Park, is where visitors find cafés open at weekends.

Local tip: On a weekend, skip the Wacker Drive lobbies, many of which close, and walk to Michigan Avenue: Fairgrounds at 12 S. Michigan opens at 06:00 every day.

Coffee on the Chicago Riverwalk

The Riverwalk follows the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River from the lakefront and the Outer Drive Bridge west to Wolf Point and Lake Street.2 Its Marina Plaza has food vendors and seating for watching boats, and the last sections, the Water Plaza, the Jetty and the Boardwalk, opened in October 2016.2

At the Riverwalk Marketplace, 66 E. Wacker Place, Chiya Chai runs a stall of its Logan Square café with nine kinds of chai, samosas and chaat, and outdoor tables.3 The company also has a Loop café at 79 E. Madison Street. Farther west, Chicago Riverwalk Cafe is at 117 W. Riverwalk, and Coco Bar, a Mexican bar at street level, serves daily 11:30–22:30.3

Millennium Park and Michigan Avenue

Millennium Park opened on July 16, 2004, on 24.5 acres of former rail yards and parking lots in the northwest corner of Grant Park; it sits on top of garages and commuter tracks, and admission is free.5 Its best-known sculpture is Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate, which Chicagoans call the Bean, and its outdoor ice rink runs for about four months each winter.5

Momentum Coffee opened its Millennium Park café, at 11 N. Michigan Avenue, in November 2021.4 Its owners, Nikki Bravo and Tracy Powell, started Momentum in May 2020 and use the downtown shop to build the brand and support their cafés in neighborhoods with few coffee shops, such as Austin, North Lawndale and Englewood.4

Two chains on this stretch keep long weekend hours: Fairgrounds Coffee and Tea at 12 S. Michigan opens daily 06:00–18:00, and Intelligentsia at 53 E. Randolph Street, across from the park, 07:00–19:00. Toni Patisserie & Cafe at 65 E. Washington Street and Pittsfield Cafe at 55 E. Washington are a block west of Michigan.

The office core: Wacker Drive, Clark and LaSalle

West of State Street the Loop is mostly office towers, and its cafés sit in lobbies and on ground floors: Kinsley by Fairgrounds at 1 N. Wacker Drive, The Good Eating Company at 77 W. Wacker, which stays open until 19:00 from Tuesday to Thursday, Caffé Baci at 225 W. Wacker and Boar’s Head Cafe at 125 S. Wacker. Several close at weekends, so plan a Saturday coffee on Michigan Avenue or the Riverwalk instead.
