Hyde Park lies on the lakefront about 7 miles (11 km) south of the Loop. Paul Cornell, a real estate speculator, bought some 300 acres between 51st and 55th streets in 1853, the township stayed independent until Chicago annexed it in 1889, and the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition left one major building, the Palace of Fine Arts, now the Museum of Science and Industry.1

The University of Chicago fills the blocks south of 55th Street, and a good share of the neighborhood’s cafés are inside its buildings. Off campus, cafés sit along 53rd Street, Hyde Park’s oldest shopping district, on 57th Street, where TrueNorth Cafe is at 1323, and on Cornell Avenue, where Istria Cafe and Almendro Cafe share the 5000 block.1 Kenwood, to the north, adds Zaleski & Horvath MarketCafe and Carver 47 Cafe on 47th Street.

Local tip: On a weekday before 08:00, the off-campus choices are Almendro Cafe on Cornell Avenue and Robust Coffee Lounge on Woodlawn, both from 07:00; Plein Air opens at the same time beside Robie House.
