Logan Square takes its name from General John A. Logan, and its square marks the northwest end of the Chicago boulevard system, where Kedzie and Logan boulevards meet Milwaukee Avenue.1 At its center stands the Illinois Centennial Monument, a 70-foot marble column topped by an eagle, designed by Henry Bacon in 1918 for the state’s hundredth year.1 Norwegian, Danish, Polish and Jewish immigrants settled the area first; it now has a large Latino community.1
Milwaukee Avenue, one of the oldest roads in the area, carries the longest run of cafés: Café Mustache at 2313, Gaslight Coffee Roasters at 2385, New Wave Coffee at 2557, Pedestrian Coffee at 2642, Loaf Lounge at 2934 and Magnifico Coffee at 3063.1 Fullerton Avenue adds Sip of Hope at 3039 and Halfwit Coffee Roasters at 3431, and in Avondale, Caravanserai and The People’s Cafe share the 2900 block of Belmont Avenue.
Local tip: Ride the Blue Line to California and walk northwest on Milwaukee Avenue: Gaslight is at the Fullerton corner, between the California and Logan Square stations, and New Wave and Pedestrian are farther up the avenue.

Getting there on the Blue Line
Three Blue Line stations serve the neighborhood: Western, California and Logan Square.1 Between California and Logan Square the trains run on an elevated track beside Milwaukee Avenue, past Gaslight, before going underground at Logan Square.2 The 606, the elevated Bloomingdale Trail, forms the community’s southern edge.1
Gaslight Coffee Roasters at Milwaukee and Fullerton
Tristan Coulter and Zak Rye, who met while working at Metropolis, opened Gaslight Coffee Roasters on September 22, 2012, at the corner of Milwaukee and Fullerton avenues.3 They opened with a short menu of classic drinks, pour-overs and siphon coffee, roasted in-house in a space shared with HalfWit, another Chicago roaster, and served soft-boiled duck eggs with lardo and Smoking Goose charcuterie from Indiana.3
The shop is wedge-shaped, with exposed brick and old wooden beams; roasting happens three times a week in a separate room at the back, and the kitchen serves five or six seasonal dishes until 15:00.2 Gaslight opens daily 08:00–17:00 and has Wi-Fi.
HalfWit began as a project of Travis Schaffner, owner of The Wormhole in Wicker Park, and in 2013 shared Gaslight’s roaster, production space and some staff.7 Halfwit Coffee Roasters now has its own café at 3431 W. Fullerton Avenue.
Yemeni coffee and Dark Matter on Western Avenue
Arwa Yemeni Coffee, at 1950 N. Western Avenue, sources, roasts and brews coffee from Yemen, whose farmers are widely credited as the first to cultivate coffee and have worked terraced mountain farms for centuries.4
Dark Matter Coffee, a Chicago roaster that names its cafés like albums, lists both Electric Mud and Caravanserai among its locations.5 Electric Mud, at 1856 N. Western Avenue just south of Arwa, opens daily 06:00–18:00 and has Wi-Fi, and Caravanserai is in Avondale at 2901 W. Belmont Avenue.
Sip of Hope, Armitage and the late cafés
Sip of Hope, at 3039 W. Fullerton Avenue, describes itself as the world’s first coffee shop where all proceeds support suicide prevention and mental health education; it is run with the nonprofit Hope for the Day and has a second café in Hyde Park.6
Along Armitage Avenue, Damn Fine Coffee Bar at 3317 opens daily 07:00–17:00, and Necessary & Sufficient Coffee at 3624 W. Wrightwood has outdoor seating. For evenings, Beograd Cafe at 2933 W. Irving Park Road serves daily until 00:00 and has Wi-Fi, and Snakes & Lattes, a board-game café at 1965 N. Milwaukee, stays open to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
