Buckman runs from the Willamette to SE 28th Avenue between East Burnside Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. It was the center of East Portland before that city merged with Portland and is named for Cyrus Buckman, a 19th-century orchardist. Lone Fir Cemetery dates from 1855, and Ota Tofu is called the oldest existing tofu shop in the United States.1 The Burnside, Morrison and Hawthorne bridges link it to downtown, and much of the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade along its riverbank opened in 2001.1
Kerns lies to the north, between the Lloyd District and Laurelhurst, and is named for William Kerns, its first homesteader, who cleared a 320-acre claim in the 1850s. Sandy Boulevard, its main road, follows a route Native Americans used between the Willamette and Sandy rivers, and NE 28th Avenue is a restaurant row near the Art Deco Laurelhurst Theater.2 Bialy Bird at 1412 SE Morrison Street and La Lucha Coffee at 1416 SE Stark sit on the Buckman side.
Local tip: Heart on East Burnside closes at 15:00; for an afternoon coffee, Crema on SE Ankeny and Roseline on NE Davis both stay open until 18:00.
