Downtown Portland lies on the west bank of the Willamette, south of Burnside Street.1 Its center is Pioneer Courthouse Square, a 40,000-square-foot block bounded by SW Broadway, 6th Avenue, Morrison and Yamhill streets. It opened in 1984 on the site of the Portland Hotel, which stood from 1890 until 1951 and was replaced by a two-story parking lot, and it is known as Portland's living room.2

Downtown has more cafés than any other part of the city, and many keep office hours: they open by 07:00, close by mid-afternoon and several shut at weekends. Coffee bars line SW Broadway and SW 5th and 6th avenues, while tea counters such as Honey Pearl Cafe on SW 12th and Mako Matcha Mill on SW 13th open later, at noon and 09:00.

Local tip: On a Saturday, pair the farmers market in the South Park Blocks with Wild Rose Coffee on SW 6th, open from 07:00 every day; many downtown bars, including 40 LBS on SW 2nd and SW 6th, are closed at weekends.
