The Alberta Arts District follows NE Alberta Street for about 1.5 miles, from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to NE 33rd Avenue, and links the King, Vernon and Concordia neighborhoods. Immigrants built it up in the 1880s and streetcars arrived in 1903; by the late 1980s the street had suffered from gang activity and disinvestment.1

A revival began in the early 1990s, and the number of businesses on the street grew from 60 to 112 between 1996 and 1999, while many earlier residents, mostly minority and lower-income, moved north.1 On the last Thursday of each month the street holds Last Thursday, an art walk with street performers and food carts that moves into galleries and shops in winter.1

Local tip: Come on the last Thursday of the month for the art walk, but get coffee first: Proud Mary closes at 16:00 and Pip’s at 14:00, while Guilder on NE Fremont stays open until 20:00.
