Hawthorne Boulevard runs from SE 12th to 60th Avenue, with its busiest stretch of shops between 30th and 50th. First called Asylum Avenue, it is named for J. C. Hawthorne, a co-founder of Oregon's first mental hospital, and took his name in 1888.1 Its blocks mix vintage houses and apartments with locally owned shops, brewpubs and the Bagdad Theater and Pub, and the district also takes in Mount Tabor Park, built on an extinct volcano.1

Division Street, a few blocks south, is where Stumptown Coffee Roasters began. It opened on November 1, 1999, on what Willamette Week called "a sleepy stretch of Southeast Division Street", with one employee and a small vintage Probat roaster.2 Today cafés line Division from Nossa Familia at SE 20th to Rain or Shine near SE 60th.

Local tip: Coava on Hawthorne and Albina Press both open at 06:00 on weekdays; after 18:00, the Fresh Pot on SE Hawthorne or, from Wednesday to Sunday, Floyd's on SE Ladd Avenue are still serving.
