Portland's old nickname, Stumptown, comes from the stumps left when settlers cut down the forest for the town.1 It is also the name of the roaster Duane Sorenson opened on SE Division Street in 1999.2 By February 2012 The New York Times counted more than 30 roasters in Portland, and its coffee columnist Oliver Strand judged the city's coffee scene "arguably the country's most intimate". The same year the Specialty Coffee Association of America held its annual convention at the Oregon Convention Center.3

Newer arrivals widened the menu. Proud Mary, a roaster from Melbourne, opened its first American café on Alberta Street in 2017.4 Kimberly Dam opened Portland Cà Phê on SE Holgate Boulevard in April 2021, roasting Vietnamese robusta, and in August 2024 she and two partners opened Mémoire Cà Phê, a Vietnamese American breakfast café, on Alberta.56

Tea has its own long thread. The Tao of Tea built its first teahouse on SE Belmont Street in 1997 and still runs it, open Wednesday to Sunday.78 On NE Sandy Boulevard in Rose City Park, Milki Ethiopian Cafe took over the former Yigebe Coffee in October 2025, with coffee, pastries and Ethiopian food.9

How coffee is ordered in Portland

At most cafés you order and pay at the counter. Oregon has no general sales tax, so the price on the menu board is the price you pay before any tip.10 The tip prompt on the card reader is optional: in a 2023 national survey, only 25% of Americans said they always or often tip when buying coffee, and 40% opposed businesses suggesting tip amounts.11

Menus run from drip coffee and pour-overs to house lattes. Never Coffee, which began on Belmont Street in Sunnyside, is known for drinks such as the Hug Latte, with cacao, chilis and cinnamon, and a rosewater-cardamom latte.12 Portland Cà Phê serves Vietnamese iced coffee next to an ube latte, and Tōv on SE Hawthorne pours Egyptian- and Turkish-style coffee.513

Cafés keep daytime hours: more than half open by 07:00 and nearly half close by 16:00. For the evening there is Rimsky-Korsakoffee House at 707 SE 12th Avenue, open until midnight from Wednesday to Sunday, and since November 11, 2025, Rose City Coffee Co at 3370 SE Milwaukie Avenue has stayed open 24 hours.1415

Wi-Fi is common but not universal. Rimsky's has none and asks guests to leave laptops at home: the house, in business since 1980, is meant for conversation, journaling and dessert.1416
