Chợ Đà Lạt, the central market, went up in 1958–1960 on swampy ground that had grown watercress, to a design by the architect Nguyễn Duy Đức.1 Its predecessors stood in Khu Hòa Bình, the quarter beside it: a wooden market of 1929, known as Chợ Cây, and a brick one built after a fire in 1937.1 Today the market trades from 05:00 to 18:00, selling vegetables, flowers, dried persimmons (hồng treo gió) and wool clothing.1
Khu Hòa Bình is where the town's oldest café habits survive. Early risers stop at its sidewalk cafés, and after dark the same blocks fill with night-market stalls.105 Around the square and the market, coffee runs from Cafe Tùng's narrow room to a Là Việt kiosk and the milk-tea shops of Nguyễn Văn Cừ.

Cafe Tùng, at 6 Khu Hòa Bình, is named after its owner, a northerner who settled in Đà Lạt; by 2014 he had run it for more than 50 years, among worn furniture, a rusty iron staircase and low tables.2 It began on Thành Thái street, now Nguyễn Chí Thanh, moved to a kiosk beside the old market, and came to its present address after that site was cleared.3
Its reputation rests on music and regulars. Trịnh Công Sơn and Ngô Thụy Miên drank here, and Trịnh is said to have first met Lệ Mai, the 17-year-old student who became the singer Khánh Ly, in this room.2 The café roasts and grinds its own beans to a private recipe and still brews in a phin; in 2023 a coffee here started at 15,000₫.34
Nguyễn Chí Thanh, Cafe Tùng's first street, has Len's Cafe at No. 7, open 10:00–22:00, and Cafe 84 at No. 84. Two early openers are nearby: Cà phê nguyên chất TRANG at 34 Hai Bà Trưng starts at 06:00, and Coffee One Day at 05 Trần Quốc Toản runs from 06:00 to midnight, later than any other café around the market.
An Cafe, a flower-garden café at 63Bis Ba Tháng Hai, opens 07:00–22:00 and serves brunch; an August 2026 guide put its drinks at 30,000–55,000₫.96 Là Việt, the Đà Lạt roaster, keeps a coffee kiosk on Khu Hòa Bình itself. Gu Coffee at 02 Trương Công Định, Phuoc Coffee at 46 Thủ Khoa Huân and HYM coffee at 7 Hải Thượng fill in the side streets.
The night market takes over Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, the market's own street, from about 17:00; it shares Khu Hòa Bình with the day market, and its stalls sell bánh tráng nướng (grilled rice paper), snails, yogurt and soy milk with sweet cakes.5 As of 2026, a cup of hot soy milk with ginger or pandan costs 10,000–20,000₫ there and at the stalls around Hòa Bình square.6
Nguyễn Văn Cừ is the street for a sweet drink: Trang Sua Bap Bi Do is at No. 6 and KOS milk tea at No. 10, and Wikivoyage listed a soy-milk stall at No. 2 in 2022.7 On weekend nights local bands gather to play around Hòa Bình.8
The center around Xuân Hương Lake is walkable from here. Xe ôm (motorbike taxis) wait on most corners, and as of 2026 a Grab bike ride costs 10,000–30,000₫ and a Grab car 40,000–80,000₫.711 The last local bus of the day leaves Hòa Bình Square at 17:30, so plan any trip out of town by bus for the morning.7
