Đà Lạt sits about 1,500 m up on the Lâm Viên plateau, which Alexandre Yersin explored in 1893; the French then built a resort here so Europeans could escape the heat of the coast and the Mekong Delta, and the first hotel went up in 1907.1 Temperatures average 14–23 °C, with rain from May to October.1 On 1 July 2025 the city government was abolished, and the old center now forms the ward of Xuân Hương - Đà Lạt in Lâm Đồng province.15

The province is Vietnam's biggest coffee grower: its 2025 harvest was estimated at just over 1 million tonnes, 50.49% of the national total.3 Around 90% of its exports are robusta. The arabica grows mainly on the Lâm Viên plateau, at places such as Cầu Đất, about 1,500 m up, and in October 2025 "Lâm Đồng" became a protected geographical indication for both kinds of bean.2

Arabica here has a long local lineage. In the 1940s a K'Ho farmer, Brai Co Lieng, planted seeds taken from French coffee trees at the foot of Lang Biang, and Rolan Co Lieng, a fourth-generation farmer, set up the K'Ho Coffee cooperative in 2012.4 In town, the old guard is Cafe Tùng by the market, where Trịnh Công Sơn was a regular; the newer cafés hang off hillsides and valley edges, where the view counts for as much as the cup.1116

How coffee works in Đà Lạt

Order as you would anywhere in Vietnam, but expect to want it hot. A phin, the small metal drip filter, takes four to six minutes; cà phê sữa comes with condensed milk, đen is black, nóng hot and đá iced, and bạc xỉu turns the ratio around, mostly milk with a little coffee for aroma.6 Say ít đường for less sugar. At about 1,500 m, with evenings near 15 °C, this is the one Vietnamese city where hot coffee suits the weather.6

Coffee starts early. Residents tend to stop at the sidewalk cafés of Khu Hòa Bình, the quarter around the market.8 On the hills the dawn ritual is săn mây (cloud hunting), watching cloud fill the valleys, best from about 04:30 to 05:30, with April to November the usual season.9 In the rainy months the downpour usually comes after lunch and lasts two to three hours, so plan the view cafés for the morning.15

Evenings belong to music and street snacks. Đà Lạt joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for music on 31 October 2023,10 and Cafe Tùng has played love songs by Trịnh Công Sơn, Ngô Thụy Miên and Vũ Thành An for more than half a century.11 After 17:00, stalls at the night market and around Khu Hòa Bình sell hot soy milk (sữa đậu nành) with ginger or pandan, and the night market runs until about midnight.1215

Call staff with "em ơi", ask for the bill with tính tiền, and don't worry about tipping: it isn't expected, though small change left behind is appreciated.7 Some hillside cafés charge a minimum drink price instead of an entrance fee, so check the board before you sit down.16

FAQ

Cafés in Đà Lạt: common questions

How much does a coffee cost in Đà Lạt?

As of 2026, a coffee at a local Đà Lạt café costs about 20,000–45,000₫, and a street stall can be cheaper. Cafés in tourist areas charge about 55,000–120,000₫, and a pour-over at a roaster such as Là Việt runs about 55,000–100,000₫. Hot soy milk at the night market is 10,000–20,000₫.

Which area of Đà Lạt has the most cafés?

Phan Đình Phùng & Bùi Thị Xuân and Hùng Vương & Trại Mát have the most cafés, followed by Tuyền Lâm Lake & the south. The hillside cafés of Hoàng Hoa Thám and the 116 Hùng Vương alley make Hùng Vương & Trại Mát the second-biggest area after Phan Đình Phùng & Bùi Thị Xuân, while the north has the most cafés open until 22:00 or later, just ahead of the market area.

Is coffee in Đà Lạt arabica or robusta?

Both are grown in Lâm Đồng, the province around Đà Lạt, which grew an estimated half of Vietnam's coffee in 2025. Most of it is robusta, but the arabica grows mainly on the Lâm Viên plateau around the city, at places such as Cầu Đất, about 1,500 m up. Since October 2025 "Lâm Đồng" has been a protected geographical indication for both.

When is the best time to see clouds from a Đà Lạt café?

Early morning. Cloud hunting in Đà Lạt is best from about 04:30 to 05:30, and April to November is the usual season. In the rainy months, May to October, downpours usually come after lunch and last two to three hours, so a hillside café is at its best in the morning.

Do you tip in cafés in Đà Lạt?

No. Tipping isn't expected in Vietnam, though leaving small change is appreciated. Call staff with "em ơi" and ask for the bill with "tính tiền". Some hillside cafés in Đà Lạt charge a minimum drink price in place of an entrance fee, so check the board before you sit down.
