An Thượng is a grid of numbered lanes, An Thượng 1, 2, 3 and on up, a short walk inland from My Khe beach. A local guide puts its edges at Nguyễn Văn Thoại in the north and Phan Tứ in the south, with the beach on the east.¹ It used to fall under Mỹ An ward, one of the four wards merged into a single Ngũ Hành Sơn ward in mid-2025.³²

Locals know it as the Western area, and it has become a magnet for international visitors.⁴ For coffee, that means the city's densest mix of roasters, brunch kitchens and late tables within a few walkable blocks. The lanes hold more cafés than Thanh Khê and Cẩm Lệ combined.

Local tip: Vehicles are banned from the An Thượng walking streets during set hours. If your café is on a numbered lane, get dropped on Ngô Thì Sĩ or Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế and walk in.

How An Thượng was rebuilt for walking

The An Thượng walking street and night market opened on the evening of 15 July 2023. Six roads were repaved in natural basalt, vehicles were banned from the area during set hours, and a night market was laid out on the Trần Bạch Đằng sidewalk between Lã Xuân Oai and Hoàng Kế Viêm, open 18:00–23:00 daily.³

A second phase worth more than 100 billion ₫ (US$3.8 million) is scheduled for 2024–2027. It renovates sidewalks on Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế, Hoàng Kế Viêm, Ngô Thì Sĩ and Mai Thúc Lân, widens An Thượng 5, 7 and 8 to 5.5 m, and adds a square with a musical fountain plus area-wide public Wi-Fi.⁴

Roasters and specialty bars

Most of the specialty coffee on the beach side of the river sits in these lanes. XLIII Specialty Coffee at 422 Ngô Thì Sĩ pours light roasts such as a Peruvian Gesha and is, by Sprudge's account, perhaps the most expensive coffee bar in Da Nang.⁵ Puna Coffee at 132 Lê Quang Đạo is Vietnamese-owned and roasts in house, using beans from Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya alongside Vietnamese arabica and robusta.⁵

Why Roastery at 64 Ung Văn Khiêm (07:00–20:30), Z! Coffee and Roastery on Lê Quang Đạo (06:30–22:30, air-conditioned, takes cards) and Passport Coffee Lab on Mai Thúc Lân round out the roasters.

Breakfast, brunch and late tables

Mini's Cafe & Breakfast on An Thượng 6 serves Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00–14:00. Oh La La! at 64a Mai Thúc Lân (08:00–18:00) and Roots Plant-Based Café at 27 Trần Bạch Đằng (08:30–22:45) both have vegan menus, and Arrow Cafe & Restaurant at 51 Dương Tự Quán serves from 07:00 to 22:00.

For late hours, Bentley on Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế stays open until 23:30 and Chong Coffee & Food on An Thượng 30 until 23:00. Doll coffee, in kiệt 1/151 Nguyễn Văn Thoại, never closes. In 2025 Tiền Phong found 24-hour cafés around An Thượng regularly hosting young freelancers, including one on Mai Thúc Lân.⁸

Evenings by the sea

My An's night beach connects directly to the An Thượng tourist street.⁶ It is one of two beaches in Da Nang where lifeguards watch swimmers after dark, from 19:00 to 22:00; in summer the daytime shift runs 04:30–19:00.⁷

Early risers have options too: Hanh Phuc BookCoffee at 126 Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế opens at 06:00, and XLIII and Z! both open at 06:30.
