Da Nang's coffee day starts in the dark. Since 2024, two riverside kiosks on Bạch Đằng have served coffee from 04:00 for the crowd that watches the sun rise behind the Dragon Bridge.1 Between that and the dragon's 21:00 fire show from Friday to Sunday,2 you'll find cà phê cóc, the low-stool sidewalk cafés that brew with a phin,3 and a specialty scene running from Àla's tasting cards in a Hải Châu alley to Puna, which roasts its own beans near the beach.4

Da Nang by area

Vietnam abolished its district tier on 1 July 2025, the day Quảng Nam province merged into Da Nang.1516 Some new wards kept old district names but cover far less: today's Sơn Trà ward joins only three of the old district's wards, Mân Thái, Thọ Quang and Nại Hiên Đông.17 Locals and drivers still describe the city by its six old urban districts.

How coffee works in Da Nang

Sit down first: at a traditional café the coffee often brews at your table in a phin, a small metal drip filter that needs four to six minutes a cup.56 A glass of iced jasmine or green tea (trà đá) usually comes free, refills included, and nobody expects a tip.6 You pay at the table or the counter, mostly in cash, so carry small notes such as the polymer 10,000₫ and 20,000₫ bills; street vendors struggle to break large ones.78

The default coffee is robusta, which has nearly twice the caffeine of arabica. Order cà phê sữa đá for iced coffee with condensed milk, or cà phê đen đá for iced black coffee, which still comes sweetened, usually with sugar. To cut the sweetness, say ít đường (less sugar), or không đường for none.6

Many small vendors now take bank transfers from a printed VietQR code,9 but in September 2026 only about 6% of Vietnam's payment points accepted VietQR Global, the cross-border version some foreign banking apps can scan.10 Card payment is the exception, found mostly at specialty cafés, so don't count on plastic.

FAQ

Cafés in Da Nang: common questions

How much does coffee cost in Da Nang?

As of 2026, national price surveys put a sidewalk coffee at about 15,000–25,000₫ (roughly 60¢ to US$1) and a cà phê sữa đá at a neighborhood café at 25,000–45,000₫. Salt coffee runs 30,000–55,000₫, coconut coffee 45,000–70,000₫ and specialty drinks 70,000–100,000₫. In Da Nang, a regular cappuccino averages about 44,000₫.

Which area of Da Nang has the most cafés?

Hải Châu and Ngũ Hành Sơn have the most cafés, followed by Sơn Trà. Hải Châu is the old center, on the Hàn's west bank. Across the river, the An Thượng lanes inland from My Khe beach hold the beach side's main cluster of brunch and specialty cafés.

What time do cafés open in Da Nang?

Most Da Nang cafés open between 06:00 and 08:00, a few as early as 05:00, and specialty cafés between 06:30 and 08:00. More than half close between 22:00 and 23:00, a few run past midnight and a small number never close. Two riverfront kiosks on Bạch Đằng have opened at 04:00 since 2024.

Can you pay by card in Da Nang cafés?

Few Da Nang cafés take cards, and those that do are mostly specialty places. Small cafés mostly take cash, and many show a VietQR code for bank transfers, but in 2026 only about 6% of Vietnam's payment points accepted cross-border VietQR Global. Carry small notes; 10,000₫, 20,000₫ and 50,000₫ bills cover most coffees.

Is the coffee in Da Nang strong?

Yes. Traditional coffee in Da Nang is robusta dripped through a phin filter, and robusta carries about 2.2–2.7% caffeine against 1.2–1.5% for arabica, nearly twice as much. Ask for ít đường for less sugar, or order a bạc xỉu, which has more milk than coffee, if you want something gentler.

Do you tip at cafés in Da Nang?

No. Nobody expects a tip at a Da Nang café, and at a traditional one a glass of iced tea (trà đá) often comes free with the coffee, refills included. You pay at the table or the counter, mostly in cash, so small notes such as 10,000₫ and 20,000₫ make it easier.
