Choosing a month for outdoor coffee

The overlap of cool and dry falls roughly from January to April, the easiest months for a garden table at midday. From September to December the typhoon and wet season sets in: September to November bring 550 to 1,000 mm of rain, and October alone averages 628 mm.1 In those months a covered terrace beats an open garden.

In the hot months, outdoor seats work best before 09:00 and after dark, which is when the late cafés come into their own.

Gardens, ponds and rooftops

XLIII Specialty Coffee at 422 Ngô Thì Sĩ seats people outside around koi ponds, and Àla Cafe in kiệt 113 Nguyễn Chí Thanh has a rooftop above its two floors.2 Cafeholic Garden Coffee at 61-63 Trung Lương 9 (06:30–22:30), TaHi Garden at 64 Mỹ Khê 7 (07:00–18:00), May Garden on Chế Lan Viên and Mộc Nguyên Coffee at 60 Mẹ Thứ in Cẩm Lệ (06:30–22:00) also seat people outdoors.

Son Tra Ocean View Cafe at 95 Ngô Quyền has outdoor seats and never closes.

Sitting outside after dark

For a late table outdoors, BOSS cafe at 168 Phạm Văn Đồng stays open until 02:00 and Normad Cafe at 106 Phạm Văn Đồng until midnight. Bánh Mì Bà Ry at 36 Đào Tấn runs to 23:45, and Bentley on Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế to 23:30. Sơn Hải at 40b Nguyễn Hữu Thọ keeps its outdoor seats open until 23:30 from Friday to Sunday. Chong Coffee & Food on An Thượng 30 keeps its outdoor tables until 23:00.

Car-free places to sit

Two of the city's outdoor spaces are built for people on foot. The Bạch Đằng riverside pedestrian street, opened in 2024, runs about 1.2 km from the Dragon Bridge to the Trần Thị Lý bridge, with kiosks and community spaces along the water.4 In An Thượng, six streets were repaved in basalt in July 2023 and are closed to vehicles during set hours.3

At dawn the beach itself becomes the terrace. On My Khe, locals arrive from about 04:30, some running first and then sitting down to watch the sunrise.5 Art Coffee at 77 Thạch Lam and Su Hào in Sơn Trà both have outdoor seats and open at 06:00. On Ngô Quyền, Trạm Bơm Cafe at number 1083 does the same and stays open until 22:00.
