Thanh Khê is the small, packed district west of Hải Châu: 9 km² and 205,341 people in 2018, close to 23,000 per km².1 It runs north to the sea, where Thanh Khê Tây, Thanh Khê Đông and Xuân Hà are the coastal wards.5 On 1 January 2025 it absorbed a slice of neighboring Liên Chiểu.3 Then, from 1 July, five of its wards were merged into a new Thanh Khê ward, and An Khê joined two Cẩm Lệ wards to form An Khê ward.2

Few visitors come here on purpose. Thanh Khê is residential, and its cafés serve the streets around them rather than tourists. Few of its cafés have a website, and several open at 05:00 or 05:30, earlier than almost anywhere on the beach side.

Local tip: Go to Thanh Khê beach before 07:00 if you want to see the fish market; by 08:00 the crews are washing nets and the sand is clear.

Coffee chains in Thanh Khê

The fishing beach at first light

Thanh Khê's coast is a working beach. Boats come in after a night at sea, fishers ferry the catch ashore in thuyền thúng (round basket boats), sort it on the sand and sell it on the spot: anchovies, shrimp, squid and mixed fish.4 Trading starts in the half-dark and is usually over by 07:00 or 08:00, when the crews turn to washing their nets.4

Tuổi Trẻ lists Thanh Khê with Mân Thái as one of the beach markets where Da Nang shoppers buy fish straight off the boats.6

Cầu Ngư, the fishing festival

The coastal wards hold Cầu Ngư, a festival praying for safe seas and a good catch, with rites for the Nam Hải deity. The 2025 edition opened on 17 February, the 20th day of the first lunar month, and ran for five days.5

Expect a procession, drums and flag dances on opening day, then sand sculpture, a seafood cooking contest, boat and paddleboard demonstrations, net-weaving, tug-of-war and arm wrestling on the beach.5

Cafés on Thanh Khê's main roads

Sơn at 12 Võ Văn Tần opens first, 05:00–18:00. Diễm Hồng at 9 Nguyễn Tường Phổ follows at 05:30 and stays open until 22:00. NBT coffee, which spans 75-77-79 Tôn Đức Thắng, runs 06:00–23:00, and Green Coffee 165 on Hà Huy Tập 06:30–23:00. cafe sạch at 97 Thái Thị Bôi is open 24 hours with Wi-Fi.

Điện Biên Phủ has Mai Linh 246 and Molly's at 267; Hoàng Hoa Thám has Cafe Phố at 01 and Coffee Lagare at 11. Passport Coffee Roastery on Trường Thi 6 is the Thanh Khê stop for specialty coffee, with Wi-Fi and outdoor seats. The Third House Coffee sits in kiệt 142 off Lê Độ.

Thanh Khê before a flight

The airport is about 3 km from central Hải Châu and Thanh Khê, 10 to 15 minutes by car in normal traffic.7 A ride-hailing car takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the hour.7

That makes Thanh Khê a sensible last stop between hotel checkout and an evening flight. NBT coffee and Green Coffee 165 both stay open until 23:00, and cafe sạch does not close at all.
