Hải Châu is Da Nang's old center, on the west bank of the Hàn river. As a district it covered about 21 km² and held 221,324 people in 2018, roughly 10,500 per km².2 Resolution 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15, under which the new wards began operating on 1 July 2025, split it in two: the northern wards became Hải Châu ward and the southern ones Hòa Cường ward.12 Locals and ride-hailing drivers still say Hải Châu for the whole thing.

This is where Da Nang works, and its cafés follow the office day. Hải Châu has the widest choice of cafés of any area, from a 05:00 counter on Ông Ích Khiêm to small roasters in the kiệt (alleys) behind Nguyễn Chí Thanh. It nearly matches Ngũ Hành Sơn for specialty cafés, so it is the easiest part of the city to compare a phin-dripped robusta with a pour-over on the same morning.

Local tip: The cathedral's main gate on Trần Phú is often shut. Walk around to the back gate on Yên Bái to get in.

Getting to Hải Châu from the airport

Da Nang's airport sits inside the old Hải Châu district, about 3 km southwest of the center, and a car into town takes 10 to 15 minutes in normal traffic.9 City buses 06 and 12 stop a 5- to 10-minute walk from the terminal, on Nguyễn Văn Linh or Duy Tân, and the ride takes 30 to 45 minutes.9

On the river side, the Bạch Đằng pedestrian street opened in June 2024. It runs about 1.2 km from the Dragon Bridge to the Trần Thị Lý bridge, covers roughly 8 hectares, and has public restrooms and free Wi-Fi points along the way.6

From the Hàn market to the Rooster Church

The Hàn market fills the block between Trần Phú, Bạch Đằng, Hùng Vương and Nguyễn Thái Học. A 1657 stele at Long Thủ pagoda records that the commune of Hải Châu came into being at the same time as the market, and the present two-floor hall on 3,000 m² dates from a 1990 rebuild.3 Stalls sell fabric, shoes and souvenirs, fish sauce, fruit and dried seafood, and an áo dài sewn there can be ready within an hour.3

Farther along Trần Phú, at number 156, stands Da Nang Cathedral, built in 1923–1924 under the French priest Louis Vallet. Locals call it Nhà thờ Con Gà, the Rooster Church, after the weathervane on its spire.4 Near the river, the Museum of Cham Sculpture opened its first building in 1919 and holds the world's largest collection of Cham sculpture.5

Where Hải Châu's cafés cluster

The cafés bunch in three places. The first is kiệt 113 off Nguyễn Chí Thanh, where Àla Cafe at number 27 opens 07:00–18:00 and Nối Café is at number 18. Àla is a two-story room with a rooftop and an orange La Marzocco machine, and every cup comes with a tasting card.8

The second is Thái Phiên: Brewman at 27/21 (06:30–22:00), Hachi Coffee at 59 (06:00–22:00) and Phinn Cafe in kiệt 27. The third is Ông Ích Khiêm, where Cà Phê Chim 606 opens at 05:00 and Soncha Roastery sits in kiệt 21. Becoming Specialty Coffee at 74 Thi Sách is one of the few Hải Châu cafés with both card payment and air-conditioning.

For late hours, Trình cà phê stays open until 01:30 and Bánh Mì Bà Ry at 36 Đào Tấn until 23:45, while Cafe Việt Anh at 411 Hải Phòng never closes.

Timing a visit around the river

Since 2024 two kiosk cafés on the Bạch Đằng pedestrian street have opened at 04:00, and hundreds of people come to watch the sun rise over the river, with the Dragon Bridge in view, around 05:00. By 06:00 most are heading home.7

At the other end of the day, the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and then water at 21:00 every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday: about two minutes of fire, three of water.10 Once finished, the pedestrian street is planned to stay open from 15:00 to midnight.6
