The Old Quarter, phố cổ in Vietnamese, is the grid of narrow streets north of Hoàn Kiếm lake. Its official boundary, set by a Ministry of Construction decision in 1995, takes in about 100 hectares and 76 streets.1 Its other name, Hà Nội 36 phố phường, recalls the 36 streets or guilds that once made up the city's trading town.1

For coffee it is the oldest and most crowded part of Hanoi, with cafés in shophouses, on sidewalks and on upper floors above shops. Hàng Buồm and Nguyễn Hữu Huân have more of them than any other street.

Local tip: Start before 07:00: Triều Patisserie on Hàng Nón opens at 06:00 and Cà Phê Sinh on Lò Rèn at 06:30, before most of the quarter's cafés open.

Where these cafés are: Hoàn Kiếm (119).

How the 36 streets got their names

Craftsmen from villages around the city used to gather by trade to sell to merchants, and many streets still begin with hàng, meaning wares: Hàng Tre for bamboo, Hàng Đồng for copper.1 Few still sell what their names promise. Hàng Buồm, the sails street, is now known for Vietnamese cakes and candy.1

Most of the historic houses are shophouses with slanted tile roofs, largely built in the 18th and 19th centuries.1 Several city gates once stood here, and only Ô Quan Chưởng survives.1

Đồng Xuân market and the late-night streets

During French rule two small markets were demolished to make way for Đồng Xuân market, built in 1889 about 600 m north of the lake.12 Its three stories are divided into stalls for wholesale and small traders.2 A fire in 1994 nearly destroyed it, and it was partly rebuilt in its original form.2

The latest-closing Old Quarter cafés are a few streets south of the market. Cà Phê Hanoi Station at 31 Hàng Mành opens 07:30–05:30, Cà Phê & Bar Circle on Hàng Quạt closes at midnight, and Mira Coffee at 15 Đào Duy Từ opens 12:00–00:00.

Where the Old Quarter's cafés cluster

Hàng Buồm has Cà Phê Vân at 23, Cà Phê Linh at 65 and Cà Phê Kim Lài at 99. Nguyễn Hữu Huân has Cà Phê Giảng at 39, the café a 2015 Lonely Planet feature credited with first making egg coffee in the 1940s.3 Lãn Ông has Cà Phê Blackbird at 63B (07:00–21:30) and Hanoi Croissant & Coffee at 19.

On Hàng Gai, Cafè Phố Cổ at number 11 is the place that feature described as hidden behind a shop entrance, with a balcony looking over Hoàn Kiếm lake.3 Gau Coffee & Bakery is further along at 82 Hàng Gai, and The Note Coffee is at 64 Lương Văn Can.
