Hanoi's late café hours are shaped by regulation as much as by habit. Until 2016, restaurants, cafés, nightclubs and karaoke parlors across the city had to close at midnight.1 Most late cafés still finish well before that: 23:00 is the most common closing time, followed by 22:00 and 22:30.

Only a few run past midnight. Cà Phê Hanoi Station at 31 Phố Hàng Mành, in the Old Quarter, opens 07:30–05:30. Mơ Cà Phê at 2 Đường Trung Yên 10A in Cầu Giấy stays open until 03:00, and Miutea on Lê Văn Hiến in Tây Hồ until 02:00.

Local tip: On weekend nights, walk the car-free streets around Hoàn Kiếm lake first, then head into the Old Quarter for coffee: Mira Coffee and Cà Phê & Bar Circle both stay open until midnight.

Where these cafés are: Hoàn Kiếm (42), Cầu Giấy (33), Đống Đa (17), Thanh Xuân (16), Tây Hồ (West Lake) (16), Ba Đình (14), Hai Bà Trưng (8), Long Biên (2).

Hanoi's midnight rule and its exceptions

From September 2016 the city let businesses in Hoàn Kiếm district stay open until 02:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, a trial meant to help tourism.1 The conditions were demanding: full licences, food and fire safety certificates, soundproofing where needed and free Wi-Fi for customers. In the first days, Hàng Buồm and Đồng Xuân wards, both dense with cafés and restaurants, had not received a single application.2

A national framework followed. Prime Minister's Decision 1129/QĐ-TTg of 27 July 2020 approved a scheme for the night-time economy, usually defined as services running from 18:00 to 06:00.3 Hanoi's night-time zones include the walking space around Hoàn Kiếm lake, Trịnh Công Sơn walking street, food streets and the Đồng Xuân night market.3

Weekend nights around Hoàn Kiếm lake

On weekends the lake is the center of late Hanoi. Its walking street runs from 19:00 Friday to 24:00 Sunday, with cars and motorbikes kept off the surrounding roads, among them Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Lê Thái Tổ and Tràng Tiền.4 The Hàng Đào and Hàng Ngang night markets are close by.4

Weekend evenings there come with street performances, calligraphy and portrait stalls, and traditional games such as ô ăn quan, a stone-counting board game.4 The Old Quarter cafés a few streets north are the natural place to sit down afterwards.

Where late cafés cluster in Hanoi

Hoàn Kiếm has the most late cafés, with Cầu Giấy close behind and Thanh Xuân, Đống Đa, Ba Đình and Tây Hồ well back. In the Old Quarter, Cà Phê & Bar Circle on Phố Hàng Quạt and Mira Coffee at 15 Đào Duy Từ both pour until midnight.

Outside the center, 9.0cafe at 1D Trần Duy Hưng in Cầu Giấy and 5050 Rooftop Cafe & Pub, on the seventh floor of the Thành Đạt building at 6/66A Triều Khúc in Thanh Xuân, stay open until 01:00.

Hanoi's seasons after dark

Summer evenings explain much of the late habit. July is Hanoi's hottest month, with a mean daily minimum of 26.5°C, and most of the year's rain falls between May and October.5 In winter, December to February, the northeast monsoon brings cool, dry weather and the city's driest months, with about 20 mm of rain each.5 Winter is the season for a hot drink late.
