Hoàn Kiếm covers the center of Hanoi: the lake that gives it its name, the Old Quarter's trade streets to the north and the French-planned blocks to the south and east. Hoàn Kiếm means Lake of the Restored Sword, after the legend in which a golden turtle took back the sword Lê Lợi had used against the Ming; he became emperor in 1428.1 No other Hanoi district has a denser choice of cafés.

Since 1 July 2025 there is no Hoàn Kiếm district. Its Old Quarter wards, among them Hàng Bạc, Hàng Buồm, Hàng Đào and Hàng Gai, became the new Hoàn Kiếm ward, while Hàng Bài, Phan Chu Trinh and Trần Hưng Đạo south of the lake became Cửa Nam ward.5

Local tip: From 19:00 Friday until midnight Sunday the lake roads are closed to motor traffic, so ask a taxi to drop you on a side street such as Hàng Bài and walk the last stretch.

Around Hoàn Kiếm lake

The lake is about 700 m long and 200 m wide, roughly 12 hectares and only 1–1.4 m deep, and the loop along its shore roads is 1.7–1.8 km.1 The red Thê Húc bridge, built in 1865, leads from the eastern shore to Ngọc Sơn temple on Jade Island; as of 2026 the temple opens roughly 07:00–18:00, charges 30,000₫ and expects covered shoulders and knees.1 Tháp Rùa (Turtle Tower), built 1884–1886 on an islet in the southern half, has no boat service and is lit at night.1

From 19:00 on Friday to midnight on Sunday, the lakeside roads become a walking street closed to cars and motorbikes, including Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Lê Thái Tổ, Hàng Khay, Tràng Tiền and Lý Thái Tổ.2 It also runs on public holidays, Tết and special events.2 Between 05:00 and 07:00 the shore is at its calmest.1

The French Quarter and the cathedral streets

South-east of the lake the street grid changes. The Opera House at 1 Tràng Tiền, built between 1901 and 1911 as a smaller version of the Palais Garnier in Paris, stands at the head of Tràng Tiền street.3 To the west, St. Joseph's Cathedral was consecrated on 24 December 1886 on the site of the old Báo Thiên pagoda, at the end of Nhà Thờ (Church) street.4 Its 18:00 Sunday Mass draws crowds that spill into the surrounding streets.4

Nhà Thờ is a short café street: Cà Phê MVTTS at number 5, Refined at 17, Take Eat Easy at 18 and Cà Phê Trà Chanh at 26. Cà Phê AnAn at 10 Nhà Chung opens 08:00–22:00, and The Little Plan café at 11 Phủ Doãn opens 10:00–22:00.

Where Hoàn Kiếm's cafés are

About a third of Hoàn Kiếm's cafés are in the Old Quarter. Many of the rest cluster on Hàng Bún and its lane, and south of the lake on Tông Đản, Bà Triệu, Lý Thường Kiệt and Tuệ Tĩnh. On the lakeshore roads, Conifer Bốn Mùa at 50 Lê Thái Tổ (07:00–23:00) has outdoor seats and Cà Phê Dinh 13 at 13 Đinh Tiên Hoàng opens 07:00–22:00.

Among the late closers, XLIII Coffee on Quang Trung opens at 06:30 and closes at 22:30, Brobusta Coffee at 51 Bùi Thị Xuân runs 07:00–23:00, and Tranquil Books & Coffee at 5 Nguyễn Quang Bích opens 08:00–22:30.

The railway cafés near Phùng Hưng

The cafés along the railway, mainly in the Khâm Thiên and Phùng Hưng areas, remain a point of friction with the city.6 In March 2025 the Hanoi Department of Tourism told travel agencies not to promote or run tours to the railway café area, which then spanned the old Cửa Nam, Hàng Bông and Cửa Đông wards.7

In January 2026 the city went further and asked the Ministry of Construction to end passenger trains between Hà Nội and Long Biên stations, with southbound services terminating at Hà Nội Station and northbound ones at Gia Lâm.6 In February 2026 the city and the ministry agreed to cut passenger trains and stop freight through the area.8 By October 2026 no report said the change had taken effect. On Phùng Hưng, Local Bread at 16C opens 07:30–22:30, but a café's hours say nothing about access to the tracks.

FAQ

Hoàn Kiếm cafés: questions

When is the Hoàn Kiếm lake walking street in Hanoi open?

The walking street around Hoàn Kiếm lake runs every week from 19:00 on Friday to midnight on Sunday, and also on public holidays, Tết and special events. Cars and motorbikes are banned on roads including Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Lê Thái Tổ, Hàng Khay, Tràng Tiền and Lý Thái Tổ, so lakeside cafés on those streets are reached on foot.

What happened to Hoàn Kiếm district in Hanoi after July 2025?

Hanoi's districts were abolished on 1 July 2025. The Old Quarter wards of the former Hoàn Kiếm district, such as Hàng Bạc, Hàng Buồm, Hàng Đào and Hàng Gai, now form Hoàn Kiếm ward, and Hàng Bài, Phan Chu Trinh and Trần Hưng Đạo south of the lake form Cửa Nam ward.

Can tourists visit the train street cafés in Hanoi's Hoàn Kiếm area?

The city discourages it. In March 2025 Hanoi's Department of Tourism told travel agencies not to promote or run tours to the railway café area, and in February 2026 the city and the Ministry of Construction agreed to cut passenger trains and stop freight through the area. A café's opening hours there say nothing about access to the tracks.
