Hanoi drinks its coffee sitting down and slowly: a 2015 Lonely Planet feature called it the center of Vietnam's coffee culture, with sidewalk cafés full from morning to night and people staying for hours over one cup.1 The seat is a low plastic stool on the pavement.2 The usual order is cà phê nâu (literally "brown coffee"), the northern name for coffee with condensed milk.13

Egg coffee was first made here, at Cà Phê Giảng in the 1940s.14 Coconut coffee was popularized by Cộng Cà Phê, a chain that started on Triệu Việt Vương street in 2007.35

How coffee works in Hanoi

Hanoi has its own vocabulary. Milk coffee is cà phê nâu rather than the southern cà phê sữa, and black coffee is cà phê đen, which comes sweetened unless you ask for không đường (no sugar).16 Add nóng for hot or đá for iced.36 Winter, December to February, is cool and dry, so hot coffee is a real option: Hanoi's January daily mean is 16.4°C, against 27.3°C in Ho Chi Minh City.78

Some of the best-known cafés are easy to walk past. Cà Phê Phố Cổ is reached through a shop and up a spiral staircase to a balcony over Hoàn Kiếm lake.1 Cà Phê Giảng also sits up a narrow staircase.9 A phin, the small metal drip filter, takes four to six minutes, and a free glass of iced tea (trà đá) normally comes with the coffee.6 To pay, ask for tính tiền (the bill); tipping isn't expected at traditional cafés.6

The railway café strip known as Train Street has been officially closed to visitors since October 2019, with barriers at the Trần Phú entrance, though thousands still walk in each day.1718 In March 2025 the city tourism department told agencies to stop running tours there.19 In February 2026 the city and the Ministry of Construction agreed to cut passenger trains and stop freight through the area, so check the current situation locally.1820

Where was egg coffee invented in Hanoi?

Egg coffee dates to 1946 in Hanoi and is credited to Nguyễn Văn Giảng, who worked at the Metropole hotel. Milk was scarce, so he replaced it with egg yolk whipped with sugar and condensed milk. His family's café, Cà Phê Giảng on Nguyễn Hữu Huân at the edge of the Old Quarter, still serves it, and many other Hanoi cafés now make their own version.

In March 2025 the city's tourism department told agencies not to run tours there, and in February 2026 the city and the Ministry of Construction agreed to cut passenger trains and stop freight through the area.
