Josefstadt, the 8th district, is Vienna's smallest, at 1.08 km², bounded by Alser Straße, Lerchenfelder Straße, the Gürtel and Landesgerichtsstraße.1 The city bought the settlement in 1700 and named it after Emperor Joseph I.2 It has grown into a middle-class quarter, the nearby University of Vienna keeps it popular with students, and many of Vienna's mayors have lived here.1
Josefstädter Straße runs through the middle, from Café Eiles at its eastern end to Café Hummel farther west, past the Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna's oldest continuously operating theater.3 The side streets, Lange Gasse and Florianigasse in particular, hold small daytime cafés.
Nothing matches those filters here. See all cafés in Vienna.
The U2 runs along the eastern edge, with Rathaus station on the border with the Innere Stadt, and the U6 runs along the western edge, stopping at Josefstädter Straße.23 Trams 2 and 5 and bus 13A cross the district, and tram 33 stops at Albertgasse.3
Café Eiles, at the corner of Josefstädter Straße 2 and Landesgerichtsstraße, moved into its building on 15 November 1840. Friedrich Hebbel lived in a flat above it from 1846 to 1850, and members of parliament met there after the Reichsrat building opened in 1883. Friedrich Eiles took over in 1901, and much of today's interior comes from Alois Ortner's redesign of 1933.4 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, until midnight.5
Café Hummel, at Josefstädter Straße 66, opened in the 1870s as Café Parsival. Karl Hummel took it over in 1935, his son Georg made it a café-restaurant in 1973, and his daughter Christina has run it since 2005; Robert Musil had a regular table there from 1934 to 1938.6 It went non-smoking on 1 May 2017.6 It opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday and closes at midnight.
Between the two old houses, Kaffeemodul at Josefstädter Straße 35 opens weekdays from 07:30, Palais Strozzi stands at No. 39, and Jonas Reindl has a café at No. 67.27 Coffee & Friends is at No. 7 and kneckbox at No. 60.
On Lange Gasse, the house Zur heiligen Dreifaltigkeit at No. 34, now the Alte Backstube, is a textbook baroque suburban building, and Ödön von Horváth set part of Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald (Tales from the Vienna Woods) on this street.2 Café Namenlos at No. 31 opens daily except Sunday, and Hiddenkitchen Kiosk at No. 63 serves weekday lunches, 11:00–15:00. On Florianigasse, Café Merkur at No. 18 is a student favorite for its prices and opens daily until midnight.3
The baroque Piaristenkirche Maria Treu is decorated with frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch.23 Cafe der Provinz, at Maria-Treu-Gasse 3 beside it, sells mostly organic products and opens daily 08:00–23:00.3
Nearby, olive at Skodagasse 10 opens weekdays at 08:00 and weekends at 09:00, and People On Caffeine on Schlösselgasse keeps weekday hours, 08:00–17:00.

Café Eiles moved into its building at Josefstädter Straße 2, on the corner of Landesgerichtsstraße, on 15 November 1840. Friedrich Eiles took it over in 1901, and much of the interior dates from a 1933 redesign. It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, and closes at midnight.
Café Hummel at Josefstädter Straße 66 has been run by the Hummel family since Karl Hummel took it over in 1935. His granddaughter Christina Hummel has run it since 2005. It opened in the 1870s as Café Parsival, Robert Musil had a regular table there in the 1930s, and it opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday.
The U2 stops at Rathaus on the eastern edge of Josefstadt, and the U6 stops at Josefstädter Straße on the western edge. Trams 2 and 5 and bus 13A cross the district, and tram 33 stops at Albertgasse. The district is only 1.08 km², so most of its cafés are a short walk from one of these stops.
