Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district, is the southern part of the island between the Danube Canal and the Danube, and it is named after Emperor Leopold I.12 A Jewish community was established here in 1625 and expelled in 1670. By 1923 Jews made up 38.5 percent of residents, and the district was nicknamed Mazzesinsel (matzo island).1

The Karmeliterviertel around the Karmelitermarkt is again a center of Jewish life, with kosher shops, bakeries and butchers, and café-bars and breakfast places line the edges of the market.3 Farther east, the Prater, an imperial hunting ground closed to the public until 1766, has cafés near the Riesenrad (giant Ferris wheel), which opened in 1897.1

Local tip: Go to the Karmelitermarkt on a Saturday morning, when the farmers' market is on; stands open from 06:00, and Café Einfahrt on Haidgasse serves breakfast late.43

At the far end of the Hauptallee, the Lusthaus was built in 1784 as a lodge for imperial hunting parties and has been a restaurant since the end of the monarchy.2

The Augarten is Vienna's oldest baroque garden, with two Second World War flak towers, the Augarten porcelain manufactory and the Vienna Boys' Choir.3 Café WG on Obere Augartenstraße opens in the afternoon and stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
