During the Covid lockdowns, when libraries required masks, students moved into the cafés near the universities to study, surf and phone.1 Some coffee houses pushed back. In 2022 phil, the bookshop café on Gumpendorfer Straße, banned laptops except during a midday happy hour, and the Vollpension gave a surprise drink to guests who locked their phones in a safe.1
Most cafés have settled somewhere in between. phil dropped its outright ban after guests complained and now has special tables for laptop users, while Café Frida in the 16th district keeps a strict ban, with stickers on the tables and reminders from the staff.2 Before opening a laptop in a classic Kaffeehaus, ask the waiter where it is welcome.
Local tip: Ask before unpacking: J. Hornig on Siebensterngasse bans laptops at weekends, while das café on Burggasse lets you reserve a laptop table online.3

das café at Burggasse 10 in Neubau has reliable, fast Wi-Fi and sockets spread through the room; some tables are for laptops and others are not, and a laptop table can be reserved online.3 Café Freud at Berggasse 17 has a socket at every seat, and Coffee Pirates at Spitalgasse 17 has Wi-Fi and enough outlets.3
J. Hornig's coffee bar at Siebensterngasse 29 has a large central work table fitted with sockets, but laptops are banned there at weekends.3 A few doors from das café, Cafe Espresso at Burggasse 57 has Wi-Fi and power outlets too.
The Innere Stadt has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, with Leopoldstadt and Mariahilf close behind. On the Ring, Café Landtmann (daily 07:30–23:00), Café Prückel on Stubenring (daily 08:30–22:00) and Café Schwarzenberg all offer it, as does Castelletto on Rotenturmstraße, which serves until midnight.
For an early start with a connection, Blue Orange at Alserbachstraße 1 in the 9th opens at 07:00 on weekdays, and Café Short Break on Neulinggasse in the 3rd at 06:30. Pane è Cafe on Elisabethstraße opens at 07:00 from Monday to Friday.
Some cafés with Wi-Fi stay open into the evening. Cafe Saadi on Julius-Tandler-Platz in the 9th serves daily until midnight, Propeller at Margaretenstraße 55 until midnight from Monday to Saturday, and Nar at Hütteldorfer Straße 102 in Penzing daily 08:00–00:00. Weltcafé on Schwarzspanierstraße stays open until 22:00 every day.
Farther out, franzundjulius on Kriemhildplatz in the 15th serves until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday, and B and me at Gersthofer Straße 2h in Währing opens daily 07:00–22:00.
Away from the cafés, the City of Vienna runs a free network, StadtWien-PublicWLAN, with access points in public places across the city.4 Each reaches roughly 50 m, less behind walls or trees. After connecting you accept the terms of use, and that agreement has to be renewed every 12 hours.45
Access is best-effort, with no guaranteed speed, and content filters block some sites.5 The start page after logging in shows local information such as the weather, drinking fountains, toilets, first-aid stations and events.4
