Neubau, the 7th district, lies between Mariahilfer Straße and Lerchenfelder Straße, from the MuseumsQuartier west to the Gürtel.12 In the 18th century its suburbs, among them Spittelberg and Schottenfeld, held Vienna's silk factories, and Johann Strauss II was born in its St. Ulrich quarter.1
In 2001 Neubau became the first district in Austria where the Greens won the most votes, and with Mariahilf it has some of the youngest residents in the city.1 Its café map fits: specialty bars on Siebensterngasse, Zollergasse and Kirchengasse, a roastery on Westbahnstraße, and Café Westend, opposite the Westbahnhof since around 1890.34
Local tip: For beans roasted on the spot, J. Hornig on Siebensterngasse is open daily, including Sundays from 10:00.3
