Vienna sets closing hours by type of business. A Kaffeehaus, a Kaffeekonditorei, an espresso bar or a restaurant must close by 02:00 and may reopen at 06:00, a bar may stay open until 04:00, and the general limit for everything else is midnight.1 Many of the latest cafés in the city stop at exactly 02:00, the Kaffeehaus limit.

The late Kaffeehaus even has its own dish. Josefine Hawelka, who ran Café Hawelka on Dorotheergasse with her husband Leopold from 1939, served her Bohemian Buchteln, sweet yeast buns, from 22:00 every night.23 She died in 2005, after 66 years in the café, and Buchteln remain its specialty.3

Local tip: Plan a coffee after 23:00 for a Friday or Saturday, when the U-Bahn runs all night; on weeknights it stops around midnight and night buses fill the gap.5
