Wieden, the 4th district, runs south from the Wien river to the Gürtel and covers about 1.80 km².13 Its name first appears in 1137, which makes it the oldest of Vienna's former suburbs, and it lay in the Soviet sector from 1945 to 1955.1 The Karlskirche, the largest Baroque church north of the Alps, is here, along with the Wien Museum and the main building of the TU Wien on Karlsplatz.3
The café scene centers on the Freihausviertel, a grid of side streets near the Naschmarkt. Its main street, Schleifmühlgasse, runs from the market to Wiedner Hauptstraße, and roasters, galleries and the Vollpension share it.2
Local tip: On Saturdays, Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstraße opens only at 11:00 and Alt Wien on Schleifmühlgasse closes at 16:00, so buy beans in the early afternoon.2

The U4 serves the north of the district, with Kettenbrückengasse by the Naschmarkt, and the U1 crosses it, stopping at Taubstummengasse and Südtiroler Platz.3 Trams 1 and 62 run along Wiedner Hauptstraße. Wien Hauptbahnhof, where every long-distance train to Vienna stops, is reached via Südtiroler Platz.3
The Freihausviertel is a few minutes on foot from the U-Bahn hub at Karlsplatz.2
The quarter takes its name from the Freihaus auf der Wieden, built in 1700 and among the largest apartment buildings of its time.1 Its owner paid no taxes and held jurisdiction over its residents, and the complex stretched from Schleifmühlgasse to Karlsplatz until it was demolished in the 1930s.2
Its theater, the Theater auf der Wieden, opened in 1787 and staged the premiere of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) in September 1791; Schikanedergasse is named after the opera's librettist.42 Schleifmühlgasse now has galleries such as Christine König at No. 1A and Georg Kargl Fine Arts at No. 5, and Café Anzengruber at No. 19 is known for its Wiener Schnitzel.2
Kaffeerösterei Alt Wien, at Schleifmühlgasse 23, roasts mostly organic coffee and sells blends from every major growing region.23 It opens Monday to Friday 10:00–18:00 and Saturday until 16:00. Kaffeefabrik, at Favoritenstraße 4-6, is Tobias Radinger's café, and it serves coffee he roasts himself.5
Knockbox, at Treitlstraße 1 near Karlsplatz, opens at 07:00 on weekdays, earlier than the other specialty bars here. On Wiedner Hauptstraße, Koun Coffee (No. 37), corto e nero (No. 48) and Oak Brew (No. 50) are a few doors apart.
The Vollpension, at Schleifmühlgasse 16, opened in 2015 as an intergenerational café where pensioners bake cakes from their own family recipes in a living-room setting.3 It was started to fight old-age poverty among women, and it has a second branch at Johannesgasse 4A in the 1st district.27 It opens daily at 08:00.
Café Goldegg, at Argentinierstraße 49, opened in 1910 as Café Dobner; its Jugendstil room with green velvet booths is a protected monument.6 It has billiard tables and opens Monday to Friday 08:00–20:00 and at weekends 09:00–20:00.8 Café Frey on Favoritenstraße dates from 1895, and a bomb that hit it in the Second World War failed to explode.6
