Vienna's specialty coffee grew up next to the Kaffeehaus rather than inside it. By Falter's account, Robert Gruber of POC – People on Caffeine was the first in the city to take up filter coffee, in 2011, in a café in an annex of the Alserkirche.1 Falter also credits Otto Bayer's Balthasar on Praterstraße, opened around 2014, as the city's first stylish coffee bar.1

Graz brought its own roaster to the 7th district: J. Hornig, the specialty roast house from Styria, opened a coffee bar there and roasts small batches on site while guests watch.5 The bar sells the company's drum-roasted single origins as espresso, filter or omni roasts.6

Local tip: Buy beans before the weekend: Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstraße opens only at 11:00 on Saturdays, and Roast.ed on Gumpendorfer Straße is closed on Mondays.

Cafés that roast their own

Coffee Pirates at Spitalgasse 17 is one of the few cafés that roast their own beans; its brew of the day is a single-origin coffee made in a Chemex.2 It was certified organic early and sells beans in the shop.1

Tobias Radinger's Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstraße roasts its own coffee.5 It buys its beans directly from farmers in South America, Africa and India.2 kaffemik on Zollergasse, which pioneered rotating guest roasters, took over a small roastery in the Wienerwald a few years ago.1 Knockbox, near Karlsplatz, is a former Würstelstand (sausage stand) turned coffee stand, well known to students of the Technical University.2

Beyond the 4th to 7th districts

In Leopoldstadt, Vogel at Bruno-Marek-Allee 19A opens at 07:30 on weekdays. In Alsergrund, Goppion Caffè at Liechtensteinstraße 46a opens daily, from 09:00 at weekends, and in the 1st, Kaffeküche has a counter in the Schottentor-Passage.

Gota Coffee Experts, at Mariahilfer Straße 192 in the 15th district, uses 100% Arabica from eight countries, bought through direct trade.1 On the Neubau end of Mariahilfer Straße, Rauwolf Rosthaus Brewbar at Nos. 42–48 stays open until 20:00 on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Vienna Coffee Festival

The Vienna Coffee Festival is held at the Marx Halle, Karl-Farkas-Gasse 19, in the 3rd district. Its 11th edition ran from 12 to 14 September 2025, with roasters from across Europe; Wölfl served a fermentation coffee developed with partners in producing countries.4

The specialty bars keep daytime hours. Most close between 16:00 and 19:00, Brass Monkey on Gumpendorfer Straße stays open until 19:30 on weekdays, and Roast.ed at No. 36 on the same street closes on Mondays.
