Free public Wi-Fi is easy to find in central Vancouver. In January 2018 the City and Shaw expanded the #VanWiFi network to more than 600 locations, about 550 of them live at launch; speeds were generally 10 Mbps, there was no data cap, and logging in asked for no personal information.1
Downtown and Mount Pleasant have the most cafés with Wi-Fi, and the West End and Kitsilano tie for third. In Mount Pleasant they gather around Great Northern Way and the blocks east of Cambie Street; downtown they line West Hastings, Hornby and Robson Streets.
Local tip: If a café’s own network is slow, look for #VanWiFi or the VPL network: the city service is free, has no data cap and asks for no personal details.

Two cafés with Wi-Fi share Great Northern Way in the False Creek Flats, next to Emily Carr University. Nemesis Coffee at 555 opened in 2021 in a Perkins & Will-designed space finished in birch plywood, and roasts its own beans from farms in Honduras, Colombia, Brazil and elsewhere.3 Kafka, two minutes’ walk away at 577, has more tables and a long counter up in its loft.3
Nemesis opens weekdays 08:00–16:00 and weekends 09:00–17:00; Kafka runs 07:00–17:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 at weekends. The Federal Store, at 2601 Quebec Street, fills a corner building that has stood since 1922; it opened in November 2016 as a mercantile café selling groceries beside in-house bread and pastries.4 It opens daily 08:00–18:00.
Downtown’s Wi-Fi cafés mostly keep office hours. Time Out Cafe at 1150 Melville Street opens weekdays 06:30–17:30, Mink at 863 West Hastings runs 07:30–18:00 on weekdays, and Olivier’s Cafe et Viennoiseries at 859 Hornby Street opens at 07:00 every day.
Le Petit Belge at 340 Robson Street serves brunch until 15:00 on weekdays and 16:00 at weekends, and Bahar Bakery & Cafe is at 579 Robson.
For evening work, Avik Bakery at 682 West Broadway is open until 22:00 daily, and Liberty Bakery at 3699 Main Street reopens from 17:30 to 22:00, Thursday to Sunday. In the West End, Melriches Coffee House at 1244 Davie Street runs 06:00–21:30 on weekdays, and Beyond Coffee at 1015 Burrard Street until 21:00 on weekdays.
Passion8 Dessert Cafe at 3010 Cambie Street stays open until 23:00, and to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; Nok Nok Cafe at 2586 East Hastings Street runs 09:00–23:00. On Commercial Drive, Turk’s at number 1276 (07:00–18:00) belongs to Linda and Brian Turko, who learned from Milano Coffee’s master roaster and later took over Milano.3
