Bellavista lies on the north bank of the Mapocho at the foot of Cerro San Cristóbal, split along Pío Nono between Providencia to the east and Recoleta to the west.1 In colonial times this bank was La Chimba, from the Quechua chinpa, "the other side" of the river.2 Pablo Neruda built La Chascona here in 1953, his only house in Santiago, to a design by Germán Rodríguez Arias; it is now a museum, open Tuesday to Sunday.1
Patronato, the commercial grid to the west, lies between Avenida Recoleta, Loreto, Santa María and Domínica.2 Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese merchants arrived in the late 19th century and made it a retail textile hub, and in the 1990s it became known as the quarter of Korean traders.23 The cafés follow both halves: courtyard places around Patio Bellavista, and Korean and neighborhood cafés along Santa Filomena and Patronato.
Local tip: Ride the funicular up San Cristóbal from the top of Pío Nono first, then come down for coffee on Constitución; La Chascona, Neruda's house, is closed on Mondays.

It opened on 25 April 1925, runs 485 m through three stations, Pío Nono, Zoológico and Cumbre, and reopened on 22 July 2022 after a renovation.5 The hill rises to 880 m, about 300 m above the city, and from a chapel in the pedestal of its summit Virgin, John Paul II blessed Santiago on 1 April 1987.6 Café Tudor is on the pedestrian walkway at the summit.

Day and night in Bellavista
Bellavista is Santiago's bohemian quarter, and Pío Nono, its spine, is lined with bars and nightclubs.41 On weekend evenings a handicrafts market runs the length of the street, and the barrio is a place to buy lapis lazuli craftwork.4
The Chilean National Zoo sits at the foot of San Cristóbal, with its entrance on the Bellavista side.6 La Pérgola del San Criss is on Avenida Pedro Bannen.
