A terraza (outdoor seating area) earns its keep in Santiago for half the year. Summer runs from October to March, with the hottest days reaching 35 °C, and the average January high at the Quinta Normal station is 30.4 °C. About 80% of the year's rain falls between May and September.1

Winter is the harder season for sitting outside. In the cold months, thermal inversion can trap smog in the valley.1 From 1 May to 31 August each year, the Metropolitan Region runs its Gestión de Episodios Críticos (critical-episode management) season, declaring alerts, preemergencias and emergencias, the three pollution levels, on the worst days.2

Local tip: Between May and August, check whether an alert or preemergencia has been declared before planning a long outdoor coffee. In summer, go early: Cafeteria Morin opens at 08:00 and Fornaio at 08:30, every day.

Where these cafés are: Providencia (29), Ñuñoa (7), Las Condes (6), Barrio Italia & Bustamante (5), Vitacura (5), Lastarria & Bellas Artes (4), Barrio Brasil & Yungay (3), Santiago Centro (2), Barrio República (1), Bellavista & Patronato (1).

Providencia's terrace streets

On Eliodoro Yáñez, Dolce & Salato is at 2820 and Pan y Canela at 2470; on Santa Magdalena, Café de la Santa and Brussels Heart of Chocolate share the street. Don Bono Coffee & Bakery sets out tables at Avenida Los Leones 712, and Lungo is on General Holley 76.

Ñuñoa, Vitacura and downtown

Ñuñoa comes second. On Dublé Almeyda, Gulerie Pastelería y Cafetería (3141), CactusBerry Café (3400) and La Cafebrería (3541) sit within four blocks of each other, and Bokashi café and The Corner Café are on Avenida Irarrázaval. In Vitacura, Dulcería Las Bezanillas has outdoor tables at Avenida Vitacura 3744, open 09:00–20:00 daily, and Cakao is on Francisco de Aguirre 4753. In Las Condes, Costa Vasca on Napoleón 3140, Contenedor on El Trovador 4253 and Etienne Marcel on Augusto Leguía Norte 70 all set tables outside.

Smog alerts and preemergencias

On alert days, residential heaters burning firewood are banned across the Metropolitan Region; at preemergencia and emergencia level the ban extends to pellets, and vehicle restrictions widen.2 The 2026 season was not quiet: the region declared its third preemergencia of the year for Sunday 14 June, after 13 alerts since the season began.3

Smoking rules and late terraces

Since 1 March 2013, Chilean law has banned smoking in every enclosed public space, bars and restaurants included. Smoking is allowed only on terraces in the open air or under a roof that is not attached to a wall.4 If smoke bothers you, a table indoors is the safer choice.

For a late coffee outside, Pan y Canela on Eliodoro Yáñez stays open until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Bokashi café on Irarrázaval until 21:30 on weekdays and Saturdays. Figo, at Espoz 4171 in Vitacura, closes at 17:00 and all day on Mondays.

FAQ

Outdoor seating in Santiago: questions

When is the best season for café terraces in Santiago?

Summer, from October to March, is dry and warm: the average January high at Quinta Normal is 30.4 °C, and the hottest days reach 35 °C. About 80% of the year's rain falls between May and September, the same cold months in which thermal inversion can trap smog over the city.

What does a preemergencia mean for Santiago in winter?

A preemergencia is the middle of three air-pollution levels the Metropolitan Region declares during its critical-episode season, which runs from 1 May to 31 August. At that level, heaters burning firewood or pellets are banned across the region and vehicle restrictions widen. In 2026, the third preemergencia of the year fell on Sunday 14 June.

Can you smoke on café terraces in Santiago?

Only on some. Since 1 March 2013, Chilean law has banned smoking in all enclosed public spaces, including bars and restaurants. Smoking is allowed only on terraces in the open air or under a roof that is not attached to a wall, so a terrace whose roof is fixed to the building is non-smoking.
