Providencia became a comuna by decree on 25 February 1897, named after the convent of the Sisters of Providence of Montreal, which stood where the Iglesia de la Divina Providencia is now.1 Its 142,079 residents at the 2017 census are outnumbered by day, when about a million people pass through.1 Avenida Providencia and Avenida Nueva Providencia carry the Alameda east toward Las Condes.1

The comuna has several barrios: Suecia, once a nightlife strip and now mostly offices; Los Leones; Pedro de Valdivia Norte, where high-rise building is banned; and its shares of Barrio Italia and Bellavista.1 The cafés follow the office streets and the Metro, from Manuel Montt and Pocuro to the roasters around Suecia and Los Leones.

Local tip: For coffee before work, Felix on Coyancura, La Pastora on Avenida Suecia and Tuesta on Nueva Providencia all open at 07:30 on weekdays.
