Barrio Italia, also called Barrio Santa Isabel, covers the western edge of Providencia and the northwest corner of Ñuñoa, roughly from Avenida Bilbao south to Irarrázaval and from Bustamante east to Miguel Claro.1 It began in the early 20th century, first as Población Juan García Ballesteros (1896) and then Población Italia, and takes its name from the avenue and the Teatro Italia.1 Immigrant craftsmen settled here, Italians above all, and in 1968 the Italian community got its church, Nuestra Señora de Pompeya, facing Parque Bustamante.1
Today the low houses hold restaurants, design shops and workshops, including the furniture restorers of Caupolicán street.1 Coffee has a past here too: in 2016 Café Triciclo had its shop in the Galería La Mandarina at Avenida Italia 1392, and in 2019 the specialty bar Barra Fundición was at Miguel Claro 1873.23
