Ñuñoa became a comuna by presidential decree on 6 May 1894, when it had about 1,197 inhabitants; the name comes from the Mapudungun ñuñowe, "place of ñuños", a local plant.1 Avenida Irarrázaval is its commercial spine, with Metro Line 3 running its whole length.1

Plaza Ñuñoa is the civic center: the town hall stands on its north side, and the Teatro UC, opened in 1951 as the Dante cinema, has been a theater since 1975.2 From the 1980s students and intellectuals filled the bars around it, and the music club La Batuta opened in 1989.2 The cafés sit on the streets around the plaza, Dublé Almeyda and Humberto Trucco above all, and along Irarrázaval.

Local tip: For a Sunday coffee, Delice on Alcalde Eduardo Castillo Velasco opens at 08:00, and Peregrino on Loreley pours from 10:00 to 15:00.
