Barrio Lastarria fills the northeastern corner of the comuna of Santiago, between Cerro Santa Lucía and Plaza Italia and between the Alameda and Parque Forestal.1 By tradition, Bellas Artes runs from San Antonio street to José Miguel de la Barra, and Lastarria proper is the triangle from there east to Plaza Baquedano.1 The narrow, winding streets grew up around the Iglesia de la Veracruz, and the district has been a Zona Típica (protected heritage zone) since 21 February 1996.1
This is the museum quarter. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, founded in 1880, has occupied Emile Jéquier's Palacio de Bellas Artes in Parque Forestal since 1910.2 On the Alameda, the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) opened in September 2010 in the complex built for the UNCTAD III conference of 1972.3 Between the two, Merced has the longest run of cafés, ahead of José Victorino Lastarria.

Cerro Santa Lucía, the Huelén of the valley's indigenous inhabitants, rises 69 m above the surrounding streets.5 In 1872 Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna had it remade as a park, with a road up to a gas-lit summit chapel, fountains and lookouts.5 Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro was laid out in 1981 to save a row of historic facades, starting with the early 19th-century house of the painter Gil de Castro.1

Merced is the café street. Porta, at Merced 158, opens daily 08:00–21:00 and has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables; Bloom, a specialty bar at Merced 307, keeps the same hours.
