Pereira, the capital of Risaralda, sits at a mean altitude of 1,411 m in the Eje Cafetero (Coffee Axis), with an average temperature of 21.5 °C.1 Settlers blessed a few huts on the ruins of old Cartago on 30 August 1863, and the town took the name Villa de Pereira in 1869.2 It still answers to la ciudad sin puertas (the city without doors) and la perla del Otún, after the river that supplies its drinking water.1
Coffee built the city. In the 1970s Pereira was the most coffee-growing municipality in Colombia, according to Luis Miguel Ramírez, Risaralda's representative at the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros, who blames the loss of that title on price crises, new crops and the spread of construction.4 Risaralda still harvests 22–23 sacks of excelso (export-grade green coffee) per hectare, against a national average of about 18, which puts it second in the country.4
On 25 June 2011 UNESCO inscribed the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, which reaches into Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca; its core zone takes in 411 veredas (rural districts) in 47 municipalities.3 Pereira is part of it.2 In town, the coffee is poured in the Centro, between Plaza de Bolívar and Lago Uribe Uribe, and along the Avenida Circunvalar.
Most cafés are in the Centro, where Plaza de Bolívar, between Calles 19 and 20, holds Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt's bronze Bolívar Desnudo, unveiled in August 1963 for the city's centenary.19 To the southeast, the Zona Rosa on the Avenida Circunvalar is the center of the city's nightlife,10 and the side streets of Pinares behind it hold the second cluster.

Un tinto gets you a small black coffee, the default all over Colombia. The Eje Cafetero shares two words with Antioquia: order un pintadito for coffee with a little milk, or a chaqueta, black coffee mixed with hot aguapanela, which is panela (unrefined cane sugar) dissolved in water. Both drinks come from mornings on the farm.6
In 2019 the Alcaldía de Pereira, the Comité de Cafeteros de Risaralda and the consultancy Tazza set up Pereira, ruta con sabor a café, a route linking specialty shops in town with farms nearby, meant to get the region drinking more of its own coffee.5 On that route, a pound of specialty beans cost from COP 20,000, and El Barista in Pinares staged barista shows.5
The farms are close. Don Manolo Café, a family business about 20 minutes from Pereira, ran a three-hour tour for COP 40,000 in Spanish or COP 50,000 in English in 2019. Finca Bella Vista in Dosquebradas, which sells its own Boira brand, charged COP 50,000 with transport from Pereira, and Dos Cosechas Coffee kept a shop at Finca La Trinidad, also in Dosquebradas.5
At table service the bill may suggest a propina voluntaria (voluntary tip). Under Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio rules in force since 5 November 2022, the suggestion can't exceed 10% of the bill, and staff have to ask whether you want it before handing the bill over.7
