Kallio lies on the eastern side of the Helsinki peninsula, separated from the center by the Siltasaarensalmi strait and the Pitkäsilta bridge.1 It grew as a working-class district once factories arrived in the 1860s and is one of the most densely populated areas in Finland, with 27,051 residents on 1.09 km² in 2013.1
Kallio Church, designed by Lars Sonck and built in 1908–1912, is the district's landmark, and Hakaniemi and Sörnäinen are its two metro stations.1 Cafés gather around Hakaniemi market square, along Siltasaarenkatu and Hämeentie, and on the five numbered streets, Ensi linja to Viides linja, a naming scheme found nowhere else in Helsinki.1
Local tip: Roasberg on Siltasaarenkatu opens at 07:00 on weekdays, two hours before its sister café by the Central Station.4

The hall on Hakaniemi square officially opened on 1 June 1914. It closed for renovation on 5 January 2018 and reopened on 27 April 2023 after several delays, by which time the cost had risen from an estimated €20 million to nearly €40 million.2
The hall is built around market traders rather than sit-down restaurants. Hakaniemen hallikahvila is its traditional café, and the Nami counter sells Karelian pies, cinnamon buns and, in season, laskiaispullat (Shrove buns).3 Kaffeli, Kahvisiskot and Lounaskahvila Raiku all share the hall's Hämeentie 1 address.
Roasberg's second café is at Siltasaarenkatu 13, on the corner of Kolmas linja by Hakaniemi metro. It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends and has a terrace for 60 to 65 people.4 Kakkugalleria shares the address.
Up the linjat, Café Cucca on Kolmas linja opens from Wednesday to Sunday, Cafe Avec Kallio is on Neljäs linja, and IPI Kulmakuppila and flät no 14 are both on Viides linja; flät stays open until 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday. Good Life Coffee began as a café in Kallio in 2012, founded by Lauri Pipinen, the 2011 Finnish barista champion. The café closed at the end of 2019, and the company now roasts in Heikinlaakso.5
Way Bakery at Agricolankatu 9, next to Karhupuisto park, was founded by the restaurateurs Lauri Kähkönen and Toni Kostian with Toni Feri and Lauri Pipinen. Its sourdough is baked on site, also goes to Grön, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and its outdoor terrace is open all year.6
The park's lippakioski (canopy kiosk) is one of Helsinki's late-functionalist kiosks from the 1930s to the 1950s, and it holds an alcohol licence. These kiosks can only trade from May to September, because their uninsulated water pipes would freeze.7
On the Töölönlahti side, Linnunlaulu is a rocky ridge with the last surviving Eläintarha villas, most of them built in the 1880s and 1890s; it belongs to the Linjat subdistrict of Kallio.8 A café runs in the outbuilding of the Blue Villa.8 Cafe Taideterassi, at the same Linnunlauluntie address, is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00.
Back on Hämeentie, Cafelito at number 26 stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Mama's Empanadas on Vaasankatu until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday.
