Finnish coffee was long judged by quantity: pale roasts, large volumes and a pot kept warm. Specialty coffee in Helsinki grew up beside that habit, and the city's own coffee guide dates the shift to 2007, when Kaffa Roastery was founded.1

The specialty cafés are spread thin. Punavuori has two, while Kamppi, Töölö, Kallio and the Hakaniemi shore have one apiece, so it pays to plan a route rather than look for a cluster.

Local tip: Helsingin Kahvipaahtimo at Päijänteentie 29 in Vallila runs a public cupping on Thursdays alongside its roastery tours.5

Where these cafés are: Punavuori, Ullanlinna & Eira (3), Vallila & Pasila (2), Kruununhaka & Katajanokka (1), Töölö (1), Kamppi (1), Kallio (1), Sörnäinen & Kalasatama (1).

Its roaster, Ivan, also develops the flavors for its gelato, the menu runs to microlots such as a Sidra-washed coffee from Ecuador, and the organic decaf range goes by the tag #Resistcaffeine. On Saturdays the Töölö bar closes at 16:00, and it stays shut on Sundays.2

Kaffa Roastery's café at Pursimiehenkatu 29A opens 08:00–18:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:00 on Saturdays.
