Töölö is the shared name of Etu-Töölö and Taka-Töölö on the western side of the Helsinki peninsula; they were split in 1959, and Töölö is no longer an official district name. Most of it was built between 1900 and 1930 in the Nordic Classical style, with functionalist blocks in Taka-Töölö.1

Parliament House, Temppeliaukio Church, Finlandia Hall, the National Opera and the Sibelius Monument are all in Töölö.1 The cafés follow Mannerheimintie, Runeberginkatu and Museokatu, then reach the sea on Merikannontie and at Hietaniemi. The earliest is Café Korvari at Stenbäckinkatu 12, open from 06:00 on weekdays, followed by Marocco on Museokatu at 06:30.

Local tip: Leave the picnic at home: Café Regatta does not allow outside food in its yard, but it sells sausages for the fire, €3.20 for a grill sausage and €2.95 for a vegetarian one.34

Café Regatta on the shore

The red wooden house of Café Regatta has stood in the same spot since 1887, when it was the net shed of the nearby Paulig villa. It hosted a small summer café from the 1950s, and in 2002 it was leased to the Töölö entrepreneur Raine Korpela, who furnished it piece by piece with found objects.2

It sits by the sea between Sibelius Park and the rowing stadium and is open every day of the year from 09:00 to 21:00, with cards accepted.3 In the yard there is an open fire for grilling sausages bought at the counter, though bringing your own food is not allowed and the fire stays unlit in strong wind.3 A grill sausage costs €3.20, filter coffee €2.95 and a stick of marshmallows €3.00.4 Meritalli and Airo are a few doors along Merikannontie.

Hietaniemi beach

Hietaranta, called Hietsu, was a dump full of junk and glass in the 1920s. Sand pumped ashore from a Danish ship turned it into a beach that opened at midsummer 1930, and its first hot Sunday, 27 July 1930, drew about 14,000 visits.5 Beach volleyball courts line both sides, and in 2011 a new café and changing-room building opened, taking over from Gunnar Taucher's 1930 pavilion. Bus 24 stops nearby.5

Cafe & Bistro Hiezu at Hiekkarannantie 11 and GT 1929 at number 9 are the cafés by the sand.

Runeberginkatu and Töölöntori

Cafetoria has roasted since 2001 and was named Roastery of the Year at the 2026 Helsinki Coffee Festival, where it also won the limited-edition filter, decaf filter and ice cream categories.6 Its coffee bar at Runeberginkatu 31 opens 09:30–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.6

Café Tin Tin Tango on Töölöntori has run since 1994, serves breakfast all day and holds a full alcohol licence. The self-service laundry inside has a 6 kg machine: a wash costs €4.00 and drying €2.00.7 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and stays open until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday.

Mannerheimintie and the museums

The National Museum of Finland at Mannerheimintie 34, built in 1905–1910 by Gesellius, Lindgren and Saarinen and opened in 1916, is closed for renovation and expansion, with reopening estimated for 2027.8 Kahvila Rakastan at Mannerheimintie 13 B and Finlandia Cafe & Wine at 13 e share a block; Rakastan opens from Tuesday to Sunday and stays open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
