Kruununhaka means "pasture of the Crown", after a pasture for the Crown's artillery horses near today's Rauhankatu. The Swedish Crown took over the area in 1748, and the town had moved here beside the harbor in the mid-1660s.1 Unioninkatu and Liisankatu are the oldest street names still in use, and about 7,400 people lived on the district's 0.57 km² at the end of 2024.1

Senate Square and the cathedral are its center. The church, Engel's climax to the square, was inaugurated on 15 February 1852 and was called St Nicholas's Church until 1917.2 East across a canal dug in 1844 is Katajanokka, technically an island since then.3

Local tip: Cafe Krypta under Helsinki Cathedral runs only in summer; use the Kirkkokatu 18 entrance, where admission to the crypt is free.6
