Punavuori means "red mountain", after red cliffs between Sepänkatu and Punavuorenkatu that are now covered by buildings. In the 19th century it was known for brothels and beerhouses; today it is part of Helsinki's Design District, with galleries, design shops and cafés, and Uudenmaankatu and Iso Roobertinkatu are its main streets.1

South of it, Eira has some of the city's most sought-after Jugend (Art Nouveau) apartments, with embassies there and in neighboring Ullanlinna.2 Kaivopuisto, one of the oldest parks in central Helsinki, borders the Gulf of Finland, and on Vappu (May Day) tens of thousands gather there for picnics.3

Local tip: The Uunisaari boat and the winter footbridge swap over in mid-April and mid-November, so check which one is running before you walk out along Merisatamanranta.7
