Kuta began as a small fishing village 12 km south of downtown Denpasar. Surfers and tourists came in the 1960s for the waves, and hotels, souvenir shops and restaurants followed in the 1970s.1 Its first hotel was older: the Kuta Beach Hotel opened in 1936.2 The beach runs north from Tuban, by the airport, through Kuta to Legian.2

Legian stretches from Jalan Melasti, where Kuta ends, north to Jalan Arjuna, better known as Jalan Double Six. It is a bit more upmarket than surfer and backpacker Kuta and feels less chaotic.3 Cafés in both are strung mostly along Jalan Raya Legian and the side streets around Jalan Dewi Sri.

Local tip: For a pre-dawn flight, Bali Coffee Express No.1 at Dewi Sri Corner is open 24 hours, and the airport is about 15 minutes south of Kuta by taxi; leave extra time if it is raining.2

From the airport and along Jalan Legian

Ngurah Rai airport lies directly south of Kuta, about 15 minutes away by taxi.2 The airport's fixed-price taxi list of June 2024 charged Rp 120,000 to Kuta and Jimbaran and Rp 100,000 to Tuban.2 Legian is about 20 minutes from the terminal.3

Traffic jams are a constant hassle, worse in the rain, and the main road, Jalan Legian, can stop altogether.23 The beach roads all run west, more or less at right angles to it, and most of Legian can be covered on foot if you are not in a hurry.3 Grab cars and motorbikes can be booked at a fixed price through the app.2

The memorial, Bemo Corner and the beach

On 12 October 2002, Jemaah Islamiyah suicide bombers struck Kuta, killing 202 people and injuring 209.1 The memorial on Jalan Legian, opposite the corner of Poppies II, was dedicated on the second anniversary in 2004 and is lit at night.12 Further south, Bemo Corner, the junction of Jalan Legian and Jalan Raya Kuta, was once a backpacker landmark.2

Sunset is the beach's event: be in place by about 17:30 for a sunset between 18:15 and 18:45.2 In Legian, the most popular stretch is at the bottom of Jalan Padma, sometimes called Padma Beach, with a less crowded surf break than Kuta's, and a paved footpath runs along the sand.3 Beachwalk, the seafront mall, opened in 2013.2
