Canggu is a desa (village) in the North Kuta district of Badung Regency, about 10 km north-west of Kuta on Bali's south-west coast.1 In everyday use the name stretches further, over roughly 8 km of coast from Berawa north to Cemagi, taking in Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Seseh and Pererenan.2 Until about 2010 most of this was rice fields; villas, restaurants and remote workers have filled it since, though land away from the beaches is still partly farmed.2
Surfing came first. The village hosted an international surf event in 1990, when it was known for paddy fields and coconut groves, and by 2023 it had about 324 registered hotels and other lodgings.1 At least a fifth of Canggu's cafés stand on one road, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, which runs down to the beach of the same name.
Local tip: Pick one road and walk it: Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong alone holds a long run of cafés, and a 5 km drive across the area can take more than an hour at peak times.4

Getting around Canggu's jammed roads
Taxis are scarce, so most people move by private car or motorbike, and a few guesthouses rent bicycles for the paddy lanes.2 Jalan Raya Canggu, the main road in, is often blocked, and the Jalan Anggrek shortcut between Canggu and Berawa is narrow and congested.1 A June 2026 report described a 5 km drive here that takes 10 to 15 minutes off-peak and more than an hour at busy times.4
Holidays are worst. On 30 December 2024 Jalan Raya Canggu stayed jammed from the afternoon into the night, with queues backing onto Jalan Raya Kerobokan, Jalan Petitenget and Jalan Berawa; police blamed drivers who pulled into the oncoming lane.3 In August 2026 the Badung regent announced a planned east-to-west one-way system across Canggu and talks with a consultant on a tunnel toward Jalan Gatot Subroto in Denpasar.5
Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and the shore temples
The sand is dark grey to black, and the beaches suit surfing better than swimming.2 Echo, also called Batu Mejan, is the westernmost before Pererenan; Batu Bolong sits beside a temple with bars at the end of its road; Nelayan is a quieter strip just before Berawa.1 Fishermen sell fish, lobster and prawns on Nelayan early each morning.2
Pura Batu Bolong and Pura Batu Mejan, the two beach temples, are centuries old and credited to the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha.1 Canggu is also one of the few longboard-friendly breaks in Bali.1 Tanah Lot, the sea temple known for its sunsets, is about 20 minutes north by car.2
Where Canggu's cafés cluster
Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong carries the densest run: Miel Coffee at number 5, Oka's Bakery & Cafe at 27a, Little Engine by Machinery at 35, Word Bali Canggu Cafe at 45B and Cocomo Canggu at 91, with Milk & Madu Beach Road, Dawn Canggu Coffee and Eatery and Coffeestand among the rest. Jalan Pantai Berawa is the second cluster, with Bali Bowls, Nude, Creamery, Peloton Supershop at 46 and Neighbourhood Food at 99bb.
Inland, Jalan Padang Linjong has Crate Cafe, Rise and Shine Cafe at 71 and Give Cafe at 85. Crate is known for large smoothie bowls and long queues, and it lets you in wearing swimwear.8 Jalan Tanah Barak adds I Am Vegan Babe Cafe at 49, The Dog House Cafe at 17a and The Question Mark, while TaTa Pererenan and Honey, on Raya Pantai Pererenan cover the village to the north.
Surf-shop coffee and the hours it keeps
Coffee here often comes with a board rack. Bali General Supply runs a coffee bar inside its Canggu surf shop, serving Mandailing coffee with house-made almond milk.6 Deus Ex Machina's Temple of Enthusiasm on Jalan Batu Mejan packs a shop, gallery, motorcycle workshop, surfboard shaping bay, skate ramp and restaurant-bar onto one lot, with live music at its Sunday Session.7 Its annual single-fin longboard contests helped put Canggu on the surf map.1
Surfers set the clock. Crate Cafe and Openhouse open at 06:00, BGS - Canggu and TaTa Pererenan at 06:30, and Lifecrate is open 24 hours. Afternoons end early on some tables, with Neighbourhood Food closing at 15:00 and Little Engine at 17:00, but Milk and Madu runs to 23:00, Deus Ex Machina to midnight, and The Question Mark opens only at 17:00 and serves until 00:00.
