The Bukit is a limestone peninsula of ancient uplifted coral, rugged and dry, joined to the rest of Bali by a narrow strip of land south of the airport.1 It receives far less rain than any other part of the island.2 Uluwatu, on its south-western tip, is administratively part of Pecatu village; the name joins ulu, "land's end", and watu, "rock".3

Surfers found Uluwatu while making Morning of the Earth, a film released in February 1972.3 The main breaks, Uluwatu, Dreamland, Padang Padang, Bingin and Suluban, are mostly for advanced or expert surfers.1 The peninsula's cafés fall into three loose groups: Jimbaran at its neck, Ungasan along the Bali Cliff road, and the Pecatu lanes behind the breaks.

Local tip: Buy your Kecak ticket at Uluwatu temple well before the 18:00 show, since they sell out, then drive back up Jalan Raya Uluwatu: Wildflour at number 200 serves until 23:30.14

Getting onto the Bukit

The only road in is Jalan Bypass Nusa Dua; at the McDonald's junction, turn west toward Jimbaran Bay.1 A taxi from Kuta to Uluwatu takes 30 to 40 minutes on winding roads.1 Once there, a rented motorbike is the easiest way around, and a few bemos (minibuses) run the main routes, though neither regularly nor reliably.1

Grab and Gojek work, but drivers may not pick up everywhere.1 Informal signs saying rideshare drivers are not allowed have gone up in Jimbaran and Uluwatu, so agree on a pickup point on a main road.2

The temple on the cliff, and Bingin

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on a 70 m cliff at the peninsula's south-western tip. The Javanese sage Empu Kuturan expanded it in the 11th century, and Dang Hyang Nirartha, who brought padmasana shrines to Bali, is said to have attained moksha (release) there.4 Long-tailed macaques snatch visitors' sunglasses and phones, and a Kecak dance based on the Ramayana is performed every evening at 18:00 on the cliffside.4 Tickets sell out, so buy them well before the show.1

Bingin changed in 2025. On 21 July that year, authorities demolished 48 structures along Bingin Beach, built without permits on protected state land.5 The beach is still open, but the cliffside is a construction site, and the Badung government's staged rebuild, with a wider staircase and public toilets, runs into 2027.5

Pecatu and Ungasan: the café roads

Jalan Labuansait, the road behind Bingin and Padang Padang, carries the surfer cafés. Suka Espresso, one of Uluwatu's most popular cafés, buys beans in small batches from Indonesia and South America and is known for brunch.6 As of September 2026 an espresso there cost Rp 30,000.7 The Mango Tree Cafe is on the same road, and Lovissa social cafe is at number 27A.

Closer to the breaks are Son of A Baker, Elok Breakfast Coffee, Usha Cafe & Bakery, Forno, Salty Coffee, The loft and Zubi. Balangan, known for a long left-hand break and sunset views, has Cacao Flow Freshtaurant on Jalan Pantai Balangan.1

In Ungasan, Tarabelle Donuts at 77 Jalan Raya Uluwatu is a specialty café and doughnut shop on the main road into Uluwatu.6 Wildflour at 200, Secret Spot Frozen Yogurt at 68 and HE’ENALU cafe & resto share that road, and Cuppa Espresso bar is at 4 Jalan Bali Cliff.

Jimbaran: roasters by the bay

Jimbaran is a fishing village at the neck of the peninsula, south of the airport, known for seafood that diners choose themselves and have grilled, usually over coconut husks.8 Its cafés sit inland, around Jalan Uluwatu II: The Espresso Room, Zeus Cafe and Funny Pancake & Coffee are on that road, and Bull’s Coffee is on Jalan Uluwatu.

Tanamera Coffee Roastery, at 10 Jalan Wanagiri, opens daily 08:00–22:00. The company was founded in Jakarta in 2013, and it harvests, selects and processes its Bali beans in Manikliyu, a Kintamani village full of orange orchards.9

Swell, wind and café hours

The main surf season at Uluwatu runs from May to October, the dry season, and southeast winds make the best waves.3 Cafés near the breaks open with the surfers: Elok Breakfast Coffee at 06:00, The Mango Tree Cafe and Son of A Baker at 06:30. Southside Bali Coffee To Go keeps the shortest day, 08:00–11:00 Monday to Saturday, and Copy House Bali opens only from 15:00 to 19:00.

For the evening after the Kecak, Wildflour serves until 23:30, Lovissa and Zubi until 23:00, and Mama Donny Cafe in Jimbaran until midnight.
