Sanur, on the east coast of South Bali, is the island's oldest beach resort. The Bali Beach Hotel opened there in 1966 and is still the tallest hotel in Bali, because a 1971 rule capped later hotels at 15 m.1 Despite its restaurants and hotels, the town has a quiet, relaxed feel, and it draws mostly middle-aged and older families, many of them European.2

It is also where the boats leave for the Nusa islands. The largest group of Sanur's cafés sits on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, the main street; a smaller one is on Jalan Danau Poso to the south.

Local tip: Walk or cycle the beach path between cafés instead of taking Jalan Danau Tamblingan: it runs about 5 km north from the Mertasari area, and Sanur may be the most cycle-friendly part of mainland Bali.2

Getting to Sanur and the harbour

Sanur is a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride from Ngurah Rai airport.2 The new harbour, next to Matahari Terbit Beach at the north end, began operating in November 2022; its two-storey terminal takes the shape of a jukung, the traditional outrigger boat, and serves crossings to Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan.3

In town, a bicycle is often the best way about: Sanur may be the most cycle-friendly part of mainland Bali, and rental outlets for bikes, motorbikes and cars line Jalan Danau Tamblingan.2

The beach path, Belanjong and Le Mayeur

A paved path follows the beach for some 5 km north from the Jalan Mertasari area in the south.2 The coast behind it has been engineered: 5.1 km of shoreline, from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari Beach, was reclaimed in 2008.1

Sanur also holds what is known as the oldest artifact on Bali.2 The Belanjong pillar, in Pura Blanjong in southern Sanur, carries an inscription dated to 4 February 914 CE, set up by King Sri Kesari Warmadewa, first of the Warmadewa dynasty, in Sanskrit and Old Balinese.4 The Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur lived in Sanur from 1932 to 1958, and his beachfront house is now a museum.1
